A team from IIT-Madras has been conducting several surveys of the land pooled-in for greenfield airport construction at Parandhur in Kacheepuram district amid massive protests by the villagers.
For more than 400 days, people from 13 villages surrounding the land chosen for airport construction have been protesting against the government.
Villagers have been claiming that fertile land has been chosen for the airport which would destroy their livelihood and have also called for a road roko, refusing to allow construction of the new airport. Police officers deployed in strength detained the protesting villagers.
The proposed greenfield airport shall comprise 4,791 acres and will be built at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore. Villagers have been protesting, claiming that more than half the land of the proposed area is wetlands.
