Malayan giant squirrels seized at Trichy from air passenger

Trichy: Customs authorities at Trichy airport have seized two rare squirrels from a woman, Malaysian national, who arrived here from Kuala Lumpur.

Acting on intelligence, customs officers at Trichy International Airport discovered two Malayan giant squirrels in the possession of a passenger who arrived on a Batik Air flight (OD 223) from Kuala Lumpur on Friday. The passenger had concealed the squirrels in her checked-in hand luggage.

The Malayan giant squirrel is classified under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and is also listed in Appendix II of CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), making it prohibited for import.

Subsequently, the squirrels were confiscated under the Customs Act 1962 and handed over to the Tamil Nadu forest department. Customs officials have stated that the forest department will be taking legal action against the passenger.
