Uganda Airlines takes off as new Mumbai route adds to East Africa's air travel options

The long-awaited direct flights from Uganda Airlines to Mumbai have already begun, giving travelers more alternatives in the East Africa-India aviation corridor.

The move may also place smaller airlines in a competitive position that will likely put pressure on costs and yields.

On October 7, the national airline of Uganda flew for the first trip to the financial hub of India, a destination it would service three times each week, according to a report by The East African, an East African news publication.

The service, which was initially promised two years ago, is the second off the African peninsula and Uganda Airlines' 12th destination. Prior to the start of service between Entebbe and Lagos the following week.

Air Tanzania, Kenya Airways, RwandAir, and Ethiopian Airlines, who have been connecting customers from Uganda traveling to India through their various hubs, are in direct rivalry with the new entrant. While flag carrier Air India also offers service between Nairobi and New Delhi, Indian airline Indigo also started flying to Nairobi earlier this year.
