It’s raining charters at Ahmedabad airport as the city’s Narendra Modi Stadium is all set to host the big India-Pakistan World Cup match on Saturday and the who’s who of the world flying in for the same.
While on an average the Adani Group-run Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) handles 20 charter and 230 scheduled flights daily, the number of private jets has zoomed to possibly unprecedented levels. “Till 6 pm on Friday, 38 charter flights were reported and we expect over 110 (charters) for Saturday along with over 250 scheduled flights,” a SVPIA official said.
Such is the demand that Vistara has deployed a wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliner on Mumbai-Ahmedabad on Saturday morning, instead of the usual single aisles, with fares starting at Rs 19,159.
The craze for the mother of all matches can be gauged from the fact that the 2011 India-Pakistan cricket World Cup semi-final had seen Delhi airport record its highest ever (till then) flights due to the number of charters flying to Chandigarh that day.
To cope with this rush, the official said several steps have been taken to cope with Saturday’s footfalls. “Additional security guards have been deployed on the land side, parking areas, and general aviation terminal. Temporary commercial outlets have been set up within the airport premises to cater to the requirements of World Cup passengers. A life-size screen has been installed at the domestic terminal arrival area,” the official said.
