An Indian couple flying from London to Mumbai on codeshare flights between IndiGo and Turkish Airlines had to spend an entire day at Istanbul Airport due to an error by the ground handling staff. While the first leg of the journey from London to Istanbul went smoothly, a mis-connection in Istanbul resulted in major inconvenience for the two passengers.
A couple traveling between London Heathrow and Mumbai had to spend 24 hours at Istanbul Airport after they missed their connecting flight. According to The Times of India (ToI), the elderly couple flew from London to Istanbul on Turkish Airlines and were supposed to take their onward connection operated by IndiGo.
The daughter of the two passengers told ToI that her parents were made to sit at the boarding gate with their boarding passes. But after a few hours, her mother went to check about the flight status at the counter and was told to wait until further instructions. They were eventually told that their flight had departed.
The couple’s daughter then contacted IndiGo’s helpline in India, following which the carrier issued them fresh boarding passes for a flight to Mumbai the following day.
IndiGo has acknowledged the error and has apologized for the incident. The carrier expressed regret over what it says was an error of the ground handling team in Istanbul and is in discussion with Turkish Airlines regarding this. The ToI quotes the airline’s spokesperson as saying, “We are aware of the incident of a mis-connection that happened at Istanbul airport with a senior couple traveling from London to Mumbai via Istanbul on August 17, 2023. This was a regrettable case of a human error with our Turkish Ground Handling Services due to which the passengers missed their connecting flight to Mumbai … We have already taken up this incident to our partner airline and extend our sincere apologies to the affected passengers.”
