Pilot exodus: Akasa remains behind SpiceJet domestic market share in September too

New DelhI: Akasa’s domestic market share remained behind SpiceJet this September, for the second month in a row, as a debilitating pilot exodus has forced the airline to cancel flights and even suspend some sectors. Funded by late billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, Akasa had started flying last August.

This June it overtook SpiceJet to become the biggest airline after market leader IndiGo and the Tata group airlines — Air India, Vistara and AirAsia India. But it could maintain this position only for two months and then the pilots’ exodus brought its domestic market below SpiceJet from August. Subsequently Akasa sued the pilots who had left the airline and sought judicial directions for DGCA so that the regulator acts again the pilots.

Meanwhile, DGCA data issued on Thursday shows over 1.2 crore flew within the country this September, 18% more than over a crore in the same month last year. January-September, 2023, has seen 11.3 crore domestic passengers — up 29% from 8.7 crore in same period last year.
