Air India Narrows CEO Search To Four Candidates Ahead Of Key Board Meeting

Air India has moved into the final stage of selecting its next chief executive officer, with four candidates shortlisted ahead of a crucial board meeting scheduled for May 7.

The shortlist reportedly includes the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer Nipun Aggarwal and former Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan, who currently serves as a senior vice president at Singapore Airlines, alongside two expatriate candidates whose identities have not been publicly disclosed.

The leadership transition has gained urgency as Air India continues to face mounting financial losses and operational pressures during a turbulent phase for the aviation industry.

The airline’s board, chaired by N Chandrasekaran, is expected to meet in Mumbai on May 7 to review financial performance, cost optimisation measures and broader operational strategy.

Although sources suggest the CEO appointment may not formally appear on the meeting agenda, industry observers believe the succession discussion is likely to remain central given the airline’s current challenges.

Outgoing CEO Campbell Wilson, who took charge in 2022 following the Tata Group’s takeover of the airline, has indicated plans to step down in 2026.
