Is IGI Airport Getting India’s First Driverless Air Train?

As part of a major push to modernise transport infrastructure, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is set to introduce India’s first driverless air train. Known as an Automated People Mover (APM) system, the project aims to provide faster and seamless connectivity between terminals and key airport hubs, enhancing the overall travel experience for passengers.

The proposed APM will be built at an estimated cost of around INR 3,500 crore. This will connect the airport’s Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Aerocity, and Cargo City through a dedicated 7.7-km transit corridor. 5.7 km of this corridor will operate on elevated tracks, and the remaining 2 km will run on ground level. This driverless air train will reduce travel time between terminals and will replace the existing shuttle service.

According to Money Control, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which operates IGI Airport, will fund the project internally. Once completed, this fully automated system will function like the transit systems at other international airports in Dubai, Jakarta, Singapore, Zurich and Seoul.
