Air Asia India to roll out etiquette video for first-time flyers

New Delhi: Air Asia India is working on a novel way to help its many first-time flyers: an etiquette video instructing them on things such as when to arrive at the airport, how to clear security and when to stand up on an aeroplane.

The Indian arm of Tony Fernandes’ airline is producing the how-to video as one way to ease the experience of flying for those boarding an aircraft for the first time. The carrier estimates that first-time flyers account for one in four of its customers.

As the size of country’s aviation industry has expanded, airlines have found themselves sometimes struggling to keep up with demand — whether because of a lack of aircraft, not enough senior pilots, or passengers who do not know how to use the onboard toilets.

“The video is still in production, but we will try to make sure people see it before the flight, whether through our social media channels or website,” said Amar Abrol, the chief executive of Air Asia India.

“There are a lot of things frequent flyers take for granted, which many Indian passengers don’t necessarily know, such as the importance of packing light or arriving at the airport on time.”

Carriers say the number of new flyers causes unique challenges, such as trying to keep to schedules when passengers take a long time to clear security or trying to prevent customers standing up when the flight is landing.

One frequent problem is keeping the aircraft’s toilets clean, with many passengers unaccustomed to waterless flushes or automatic taps. “Many people don’t have a loo at home and suddenly they are having to use a loo in the sky,” said Mr Abrol.

He added that the levels of experience were often shown in the questions passengers ask.

“We have been asked ‘Can I carry live fish in a tank?’, ‘Can I carry fish packed in ice?’ and ‘Can I carry blood?’,” he said. “People are used to rail travel and bus travel, where anything goes.”

AirAsia to stop flights from Mumbai from April 29

Mumbai: AirAsia has again decided to pull its flights out of Mumbai airport—this time, barely a year after relaunch. From April 29, Indonesian AirAsia X will not operate its Mumbai-Kuala Lumpur flights, which were popular with city tourists bound for Bali. The decision has left hundreds of passengers who have already booked their summer jaunt to Bali in the lurch.
Confirming the flight suspension, an AirAsia India spokesperson said that passengers who had bought tickets on Mumbai-Kuala Lumpur-Bali flights scheduled post April 29 have been given four options. First, re-route their flights through other nearby AirAsia destinations in India (at no cost, but subject to ticket availability) or retain the value of the fare in a credit account to be redeemed in six months or change the travel date to one before April 29 (again subject to availability) or obtain a refund.
Mumbaikar who had booked three Mumbai-Bali return tickets on January 10 for a family holiday in May said the options don’t compensate for the inconvenience and losses due to the sudden announcement. For Rs 56,233, she had booked three return tickets in January for travel in May. “I spent a lot of time trying to contact the airline customer care to re-route. The options they gave us involved 10-20 hour transit in Kuala Lumpur, which is highly inconvenient. Now, we’ve decided to opt for a refund. We had luckily not booked a hotel,” she said and demanded that the airline book them on another flight to Bali or pay compensation for the losses incurred because of their decision to suspend flights.
Another passenger was looking forward to an Australian holiday after almost a year-long wait. She had booked two Mumbai-Kuala Lumpur-Melbourne return tickets for Rs 54,000 in August 2017 for travel in August 2018. She is likewise distraught.

'We are happy to have built Kochi to this extent by opening up market'

The skies are now ruled by the budget airlines which took the aviation sector by storm, given the frequency of flights among the various destinations. From a mere five flights daily servicing the Kochi-Bengaluru sector a few years ago, today there are over 14 direct flights connecting the two cities. The increase in the flight capacity, including those for the Kochi-Bengaluru route, can be put down to the arrival of  low-cost carriers on the scene. At a time when budget carriers account for roughly half of air travel worldwide,  Amar Abrol, MD & CEO of AirAsia India, in an interview with The New Indian Express, shared his plans and ambitions for the no-frill carrier. The excerpts.

Your plans for the airline?

We are one of the players in the aviation sector who started a healthy competition among various budget airlines on various routes in terms of flight capacity and low fares. For instance, the increase in flight capacity on the Kochi-Bengaluru route can be traced to AirAsia India’s entry in to the market which saw the introduction of low-cost flights.  Now, we are pinning hopes on flying to the Asean(Association of Southeast Asian and South Asian nations) and  South Asian countries by 2019.

AirAsia as a group has great reputation and regard in the Asean countries, and we will look at venturing into some of these countries, some of which remain largely unexplored. We believe in cashing in on our expertise in the Asean region and continue AirAsia’s legacy of being one of the best low-cost carriers in the world. We’re a well-known brand globally and will extend our horizon into regions that have the right growth prospects.

Why are you more interested in Far East Asia rather than West Asia  when around 25-30 lakh Malayalis work in the various GCC member states?
We have a team which analyses every route before we commence operations on that sector for it to be beneficial to the consumer and also make business sense. Our affiliate carriers, AirAsia Berhad and Thai AirAsia, already have 18 weekly flights to Kuala Lumpur and seven weekly flights to Bangkok from Kochi which are doing very well. We were the first carrier to provide connectivity from Kochi to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok; we have enabled many families to go on holidays. We are happy to have opened up tourist movements from and to Kochi.

Any plans to expand your fleet size before starting international operations?
We have a current fleet size of 15 and we are positive about increasing our fleet size count to 20 by this year-end. We will be inducting another aircraft next month. Our financial numbers for the previous quarter are also indicative of the path to profitability; we’re adding capacity and losses are narrowing down.

Currently, the  busy Kochi-Bengaluru route is ruled by Indigo with over 51 per cent market share.  Do you have ambitious plans to become the leading player in this route by introducing more flights and increasing the departure frequencies ?
At present we operate 26 weekly flights connecting Bengaluru and Kochi. Before we started servicing the Kochi-Bengaluru route in July 2014, there were less than five daily flights operated by the other carriers. Not much capacity increase was observed from 2012 - 2014. In 2014, when we started flying to Kochi, other airlines quickly increased capacity in this segment. We are proud to have created a large demand for air travel in this leisure + corporate segment.

AirAsia India notes importance of adapting to the digital era

AirAsia India CEO and MD Amar Abrol, via his official LinkedIn account, stated (31-Jan-2018) the digital era has "taken the world by storm and the aviation industry is not far behind". As a result, he commented: "With the increase in consumption of digital content by consumers in Tier II & tier III regions where our presence is dominant, the it is the time right for us to reinvent our communication channels". Mr Abrol also noted that 50% of the travel segment has already moved to mobile. "In this age, with customers having more access to information thanks to the internet, brands have to be future ready - the rise in the usage of Artificial Intelligence, chatbot and Virtual Reality, increasing use of Big Data and moment marketing will help brands understand the customer better, and craft personalised communication", he explained.
