Delhi HC To Hear Kunal Kamra's Plea Challenging Fly Ban On Feb 27

Delhi High Court on Tuesday slated for February 27 hearing in a petition filed by stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, challenging his suspension from flying with the Indigo Airlines for a period of six months.

Justice Navin Chawla asked the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to clarify its stand in the cases where airlines have allegedly flouted the Civil Aviation Rules (CAR).

The court, while hearing the matter, asked DGCA that once Kamra had made a complaint, could they refuse to look into it.

DGCA told the court that Kamra's petition is not maintainable and it was merely a regulator and not an adjudicator. The court also questioned DGCA for its tweets "endorsing" the ban imposed on Kamra by airlines.

Senior Advocate Vivek Tankha, who is representing Kamra, said that the ban imposed on his client was in violation of the Civil Aviation Rules.

Apart from existing parties in the case -- DGCA and IndiGo, Delhi High Court also impleaded Air India, SpiceJet and GoAir as parties in Kamra's plea.

DGCA counsel sought time to seek instructions and thereafter, the court adjourned the matter for Thursday.

SEBI finds undisclosed related party transactions at IndiGo in preliminary enquiry

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has in its preliminary enquiry (PE) found several related-party transactions (RPTs) between InterGlobe Enterprises and IndiGo that were not disclosed as per required procedure, a source said.
"SEBI has found several related-party transactions that were not disclosed to the company’s audit committee and shareholders in their inquiry. The regulator has prepared a report, which has been sent to a committee of internal divisional chiefs for future course of action," the source close to the development told Moneycontrol.
The company said it has not received any communique from SEBI and hence is not in a position to comment on the same.
The issue of related party transactions had become a bone of contention between IndiGo co-founders, Rakesh Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia. Gangwal had alleged that the companies affiliated to InterGlobe Enterprises (IGE), which is privately held by Bhatia, had benefitted from transactions with IndiGo, the country’s largest airline. IGE owns 37.87 percent in listed InterGlobe Aviation, operator of IndiGo.

IndiGo in talks with Jetstar, Qantas for codeshare partnership

New Delhi: IndiGo is in talks with Sydney-based Qantas Airways and its wholly owned subsidiary Jetstar Airways on codeshare agreements, which allows an airline to sell other airline's seats, officials said.

Currently, IndiGo has a two-way codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines and a one-way codeshare partnership with Qatar Airways.

In a two-way codeshare agreement, each airline on its distribution system can sell seats on other's flights.

"IndiGo is currently in talks with Qantas Airways and Jetstar Airways regarding codeshare partnerships. With Qantas, it is likely to be one-way but with Jetstar, it is likely to be a two-way codeshare agreement," said an IndiGo official privy to the development.

The official added that IndiGo's relationship with Qantas may be similar to that of Qatar Airways where it can sell 20 seats on each IndiGo flight connecting Doha with Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.

"These 20 seats on each IndiGo flight are blocked for Qatar Airways. It means, as IndiGo operates two daily return flights on Delhi-Doha, Mumbai-Doha and Hyderabad-Doha route, total 240 seats are blocked daily for Qatar Airways' passengers," the official added.

In November last year, Qatar Airways had signed a one-way codeshare agreement with IndiGo that allows its passengers to book seats on the latter's flights connecting Doha with the three Indian cities.

A second IndiGo official stated that the partnership with Melbourne-based Jetstar would likely be a two-way codeshare agreement, similar to the one it has with Turkish Airlines.

In response to queries sent by PTI, Qantas Airways and Jetstar Airways said in a joint response, "We regularly explore new partnership opportunities to offer our customers more seamless travel experiences, but we currently have no updates to share."

With around 47 per cent share in domestic air passenger market, India's largest airline has been focusing on international traffic for further growth.

Airbus: 200 PW engines replaced, 100 more to go

New Delhi: India’s tough stand on replacing Pratt & Whitney’s (PW) unmodified — and snag-prone — engines with modified or upgraded ones for the Airbus A320 Neos is paying off.
IndiGo, the world’s largest A320 Neo customer, and GoAir, have 150 Neos with PW engines between them.

“Each (PW-powered Neo) in India now has at least one modified engine. PW has so far replaced 200 engines on Neos. Now, only 100 more unmodified PW engines for Neos — which also meet all standards and are perfectly safe — remain to be replaced,” Anand Stanley, president and MD of Airbus (India and South Asia), told TOI on Friday.

Following a spate of PW engine snags on A320 Neos last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had said no Neo with even a single unmodified PW engine would be allowed to fly after May 31, 2020.

Airbus and PW’s in past few weeks have logged a replacement rate of one engine daily after that directive. Asked if this deadline will be met, Stanley said, “We are fully committed to complying with the DGCA directive on replacing the engines and are making rapid progress towards that goal.”

Ashmita Sethi, who recently took over as the MD of PW (India), told TOI in her first media interaction: “With the ongoing deliveries of upgraded engines for replacement, the number of engines to be changed is decreasing every day. About 200 engines have already been replaced till now. Only about 100 remain. Very rapid progress is being made.”

PIL in HC to ground all A320 Neos with faulty engines

New Delhi: A PIL has been moved in the Delhi High Court seeking grounding of all faulty Airbus A320 Neo aircraft, used by Indigo and GoAir airlines, till their engines are repaired or replaced.
The petition has contended that the entire fleet of A320 Neo aircraft should be grounded "in larger interest of public safety".

The plea, by an association, has alleged that despite being aware of "significant technical issues with Airbus A320 Neo", neither the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MCA) nor the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have taken any concrete steps to ground these aircraft.

Instead, MCA and DGCA have only issued notices extending the timelines for carrying out the repairs or engine modifications by the airlines concerned, it has said.

"It is submitted that respondent 1 (MCA) and 2 (DGCA) have repeatedly extended the timelines for modified versions of the Pratt and Whitney engines to be installed, instead of grounding the entire fleet of A320 Neo aircraft," the petition has said.

It has also contended that despite repeated incidents of mid-air engine faults or problems in these aircraft, the aviation regulator has still not grounded the aircraft, which number more than 130 in India.

Confronting Arnab Goswani an act of resistance, says Kunal Kamra

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has called his confrontation of Republic TV owner, editor and anchor Arnab Goswami aboard an IndiGo flight an "act of resistance".
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Kamra (30) said he does not regret his actions. He said: "You do not let go (of) a chance like this (sudden encounter). It was important for me to confront him (Goswami) and tell him what he is doing is damaging." (sic)

Known for his anti-establishment political satire, Kamra said that he initially wanted to engage in conversation but did "exactly what Republic TV journalists would do" after not getting a response in Goswami.

IndiGo banned Kamra for six months after a video of his act (posted by him on Twitter) went viral. Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri termed Kamra's actions "absolutely unacceptable & endangers safety of air travellers" (sic) and advised other airlines to follow. Within hours, Air India, GoAir and SpiceJet also issued statements via Twitter banning Kamra from using their services.
The debate around his ban continued on social media and in reports with the Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and authorities standing by the carriers' response.

Delhi airport sets Valentine's day goals with IndiGo, Vistara, SpiceJet, Air India

It is Valentine's day and the romance is literally in the air at Delhi airport. The GMR group-run airport kick-started the day with a romantic Twitter conversation with IndiGo, asking the airline to "never run away from its runway."
Excited about the capacity addition by IndiGo, whose total neo-order-book comprises 730 aircraft, the airport also added that it is looking forward to "so many future planes together."
Moving on to the national carrier Air India, the largest airport in India called the airline its "first love". Air India reciprocated and said that it is glad to have found a special place in the Delhi airport hub.
For Vistara, the joint venture of Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, the airport had a special plan. Delhi airport asked the youngest airline out on a date. Vistara, which will soon be inducting the wide-body B787 aircraft, has readily agreed to this date and has also informed the airport that it will be wearing purple for the special occasion.
The airport then sent a romantic message to the Gurugram-based low-cost carrier SpiceJet. The airline responded by telling the airport that Delhi airport is always in its heart.

3 IndiGo pilots, crew members from China flight kept under surveillance in Kol

Mumbai: At least three IndiGo pilots and crew members who operated flights to Guangzhou in China recently have been kept under “home surveillance” in Kolkata for a few days.
One of them had flu, but has not tested positive for novel coronavirus and has been cleared by the Airport Health Organisation, the airline is known to have told the director-general of civil aviation.

According to sources, these crew members had operated the Guangzhou-Kolkata and Kolkata-Kochi flights that ferried three Kerala students from Wuhan. The students had tested positive for the virus after their arrival.

“IndiGo said that they have no positive case of coronavirus. The crew laid off from the China operation is on house rest,” said Arun Kumar, director-general of civil aviation.

An IndiGo spokesperson said, “We are following all prescribed APHO guidelines and taking preventive measures for our crew operating flights to regions affected by coronavirus. Currently, none of our crew has shown any symptom and they are under constant observation.”

On January 30, the Indian government issued a notification advising a 14-day home rest for people who had travelled to China after January 15.

Dr Pankaj Tyagi, aerospace medicine and alcohol testing domain expert said, “Just one positive case can infect the whole crew and passengers. The risk of cross infection increases because of the way breathalyser tests are carried out in India.”

Indigo introduces six new direct flights!

In order to bolster its international connectivity, IndiGo has announced that it will start six new daily direct flights. These new routes will also include a direct flight from Bengaluru to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from March 29 this year. Kathmandu, on the other hand, has famous Pashupatinath temple and according to the airlines these routes are expected to increase ‘social cohesion’. Nepal, anyways, is a unique opportunity for all flight operators given the increase in tourism it offers due to many Buddhist and Hindu worship places amidst the Himalayan range. This will promote an increase in mobility, said William Boulter, Chief Commercial Officer, IndiGo. He further stressed that increased traffic between India and Nepal will promote economic growth and opportunities for both the counties. Not just IndiGo, but Vistara has also opened its services from Delhi to Kathmandu for better connectivity.

India's IndiGo to phase-out second-hand A320s by YE22

IndiGo Airlines plans to retire all 42 of its second-hand A320-200s in 2022, Chief Financial Officer of parent InterGlobe Aviation Aditya Pande said during the quarterly earnings call.

"By December 2022, we expect all of them to go away. We will start returning these aircraft starting 2021, so you will see the proportion of the A320ceo that are leased and used going down in our fleet. And as we get to December 2022, we have all these aircraft returned by that time," he said.

He clarified that the plan only concerned aircraft added as used equipment by IndiGo Airlines, not the A320-200s the Indian LCC took directly from Airbus.

According to the ch-aviation fleets advanced module, IndiGo Airlines currently operates 123 A320-200s. The entire subfleet is 9.8 years old on average. However, the 42 second-hand jets waiver above this average with the oldest being almost 18 years old. The aircraft were previously operated by a range of airlines around the world, including Aegean Airlines (one aircraft), Air Berlin (three), Air Via (one), Alitalia (one), American Airlines (two), Avion Express (two), Cyprus Airways (1947) (one), Freebird Airlines (one), GoAir (two), Jetstar Pacific (one), LATAM Airlines (two), LATAM Airlines Brasil (one), Qatar Airways (four), Rossiya (one), Royal Brunei Airlines (four), Scoot (three), Spring Airlines (one), SriLankan Airlines (one), Tigerair Australia (one), Tigerair Philippines (one), TransAsia Airways (one), Turkish Airlines (two), VietJetAir (one), VivaAerobus (two), Volaris (one), and Vueling Airlines (one).

The oldest of the eighty-one A320-200s directly from Airbus is almost 12 years of age.

The Indian LCC also operates ninety-six A320-200neo and ten A321-200neo, as well as twenty-five ATR72-600s.

IndiGo pilot suspended for threatening wheelchair-bound senior citizen with jail

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday suspended a captain with IndiGo airlines for three months for “intimidating and threatening” a wheelchair-bound senior citizen on a Chennai-Bengaluru flight last month, news agency PTI reported.

It was found during investigation that the pilot-in-command “insisted” the passengers — the senior citizen and her daughter— on tendering an apology. The duo were detained for about 75 minutes after the deboarding began at Bengaluru airport, the probe revealed. Independent journalist Supriya Unni Nair, who had asked for a wheelchair for her 75-year-old mother on landing at Bengaluru airport on January 13 night, had alleged that the pilot had misbehaved and threatened them.

“It was established that the pilot-in-command’s attitude towards the wheelchair-bound senior citizen passenger was intimidating, threatening and lacked compassion. The DGCA has suspended his licence for a period of three months,” PTI quoted the official as saying.

“The pilot exhibited aggression towards the lady passengers in his dealings while disregarding the fact that the elderly passenger required wheelchair assistance… The investigation found that the captain’s actions led to “avoidable detention” of a wheelchair-bound passenger,” the official added.
Taking to Twitter, Nair had said that on landing at Bengaluru airport when she asked for a wheelchair for her mother, the cabin crew denied having access to wheelchair assistance. Seeing the commotion on this issue, the pilot-in-command intervened. He then misbehaved and threatened Nair and her mother with jail, Nair wrote. She also claimed that her mother was diabetic.

Adnan Sami reveals what Arnab Goswami was watching while being heckled by Kunal Kamra on flight

Following stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra's mid-air heckling of Arnab Goswami, the nation wanted to know what was the Republic Editor watching in the IndiGo flight on January 28. Now, we have an answer.

Singer Adnan Sami has revealed that Goswami was watching Netfilx's 'Two Popes' starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce.

Taking to Twitter, Sami wrote, "I was just speaking to my dear friend #ArnabGoswami & couldn’t help asking him how he remained so calm while he was being verbally assaulted by a joker. He said that since he’s a huge fan of Anthony Hopkins, he was watching “Two Popes” on @NetflixIndia!! How ‘Cool’ is that??"
Earlier, Kamra had posted a video of himself confronting Goswami aboard the plane. In the video, the Republic Editor was seen with earphones plugged in, as Kamra addressed him. Throughout the video, he did not react, or even looked towards the camera.

"Here I'm asking coward Arnab Goswami a question about his journalism and he's doing exactly what I expected him to do," the stand-up comedian said at the beginning of the video.

Kamra said, "He's being a coward. First he called me mentally unstable, and now he's saying 'I'm watching something'. He's not ready to answer my questions, viewers."
"Arnab, are you a coward or are you a journalist...or a nationalist? Who are you Arnab?" he asked the unresponsive Goswami.

"You will have no answers. As I expected. Your cowardice has gotten the better of you," he said amid Goswami's continued silence.

"I wanted to have a conversation with you politely. But you do not deserve my politeness. And this is not for you. This is for Rohith Vemula's mother whose caste you were discussing on your f****** show," he added.

BPIA flyers get into turbulence

Bhubaneswar: Following instructions from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regarding replacement of faulty engines, passengers of Indigo and GoAir in state are facing harrowing times as cancellations of flights at short notice is leaving them financially and mentally drained.

With several incidents of mid-air turbulence and emergency landings, the DGCA in November last year had instructed Indigo and GoAir to replace all their faulty Airbus 320neo (A320) engines. This led to cancellation of a number of flights all across the country, of which, a significant impact has been felt here where about 24 flights are operated jointly by the two carriers on daily basis.

“I had booked three tickets from Bhubaneswar to Kolkata for January 26 with GoAir. It cost me about Rs 7,500. However, just before five days of my scheduled departure they notified me that the flight has been cancelled. I was forced to book new tickets at such short notice which now cost me Rs 12,000. Moreover, I haven’t even received the refund of my cancelled tickets yet,” complained Sampurna Chakraborty.

As per sources from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA), about 45 flights operate from here. While AirAsia, Air India, and Vistara jointly have 21 flights operating from the city airport, IndiGo and GoAir have 24 flights operating with A320 engines on a daily basis.

IndiGo is the largest low-budget carrier from BPIA with 22 flights connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Guwahati and Varanasi. GoAir has two flights connecting Mumbai and Kolkata of which the Bhubaneswar-Kolkata route has been temporarily suspended.

Regular cancellation of flights operated by these carriers will affect a large number of passengers who commute on these routes, civil aviation experts opined. Sources at BPIA told Orissa POST that nearly 200 passengers travel on Bhubaneswar-Kolkata route every day. “If GoAir and Indigo which run their flights with A320 and ATR72 types of engines suspend their services, it will affect around 2,000 passengers from BPIA,” a source said.

IndiGo, Air India cancellation of China flights for 30 days could cost upwards of Rs 25 crore

Bengaluru: Indian Airlines cancelling flights to China in the wake of the Coronavirus epidemic for the next 30 days could be costing them upwards of Rs 25 crore, said sources. While these are rough estimates, the actual revenue loss could be much higher or lower depending on a variety of factors, said insurance sources.
Both, Air India --which has now suspended its Delhi-Hong Kong and Delhi-Shanghai till March 28, 2020 -- and IndiGo, which has cancelled its three dailies to China, have covers with New India and the three other public-sector general insurers. New India is the leader underwriter for the policies, said sources. SpiceJet is continuing its Delhi-Hong Kong flight.

The sum insured, sources said is $1.5 billion in coverage for a range of liabilities including third-party, baggage claim, passenger, cargo, hanger and airmail liability. While flight cancellations and refunds to customers will be paid by insurers, the overall loss of revenue for the airline from the China shutdowns will be not covered.

“No airline in India has taken a loss of profit cover. This cover would have provided for business interruptions, loss of earning power from unforseen events such as the Coronavirus global health emergency,” said an insurance official.

Ahmedabad-Kolkata flight: IndiGo plane turns back after snag; 23rd P&W engine related in around two years

India’s largest airline IndiGo saw yet another technical snag develop on its Airbus A320neo powered by Pratt & Whitney engines on Friday, a development that bolsters the stand of India’s aviation regulator asking the airline and its low-cost rival GoAir to replace all unmodified engines by May 31. On Friday, pilots on an IndiGo-operated A320neo jet en route Kolkata witnessed engine vibrations shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, following which the aircraft returned back to the airport.

“On February 7, an A320neo aircraft VT-IVY was involved in air turn-back to Ahmedabad due to high vibrations on No. 2 engine. As per the procedure, the crew reduced the thrust on the affected engine and the vibrations became normal. When the thrust was increased again on the affected engine, the vibrations reappeared and were accompanied by light airframe vibration. Following this, the crew decided to turn back and the aircraft was landed safely at Ahmedabad…,” a government official told The Indian Express, adding that the aircraft was powered by an unmodified Pratt & Whitney engine suffering the low-pressure turbine issue.

Confirming the incident, IndiGo said in a statement: “This morning, an IndiGo aircraft operating Ahmedabad to Kolkata was returned to Ahmedabad. During the flight, the pilot momentarily observed a caution message and followed the laid down standard operating procedures. Taking a precautionary measure, the pilot landed back at the Ahmedabad airport. The aircraft was back in operation after inspection”.
