"Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted in-principle approval to Air India Ltd and Interglobe Aviation Ltd (IndiGo) for import of 470 and 500 aircraft, respectively," Minister of State for Civil Aviation VK Singh said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

IndiGo A321 tail strikes: DGCA fines airline Rs 30 lakh; orders changes in operational procedures

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Friday penalised IndiGo Rs 30 lakh for lapses that have led to as many as four tail strikes within six months this year alone on its Airbus A321 aircraft. DGCA chief Vikram Dev Dutt had ordered a special audit of the airline to review its documentation and procedure on operations, training, engineering and flight data management programme. This audit revealed “certain systemic deficiencies in documentation pertaining to operations, training procedures and engineering procedures,” the regulator said in a statement.

Subsequently, the DGCA had issued a show cause notice to IndiGo. “The airline’s reply was reviewed at various levels and was not found satisfactory. Subsequently, we have imposed a financial penalty of Rs 30 lakh on IndiGo and also directed them to amend their documents and procedures in line with DGCA requirements and original equipment manufacturers’ guidelines,” the DGCA statement on Friday said.

Since last April, IndiGo has seen at least eight tail strikes on its A321s.

Earlier this week (Wednesday, July 26), the regulator had suspended the licences of pilots who had operated an A321 (VT-IMW) to Ahmedabad on June 15, 2023, which had a tail strike during landing. While the pilot-in-command’s (PIC) licence was suspended for three month, the co-pilot’s was suspended for a month. The regulator had issued show cause to the pilots on this incident and found “violation of the provisions of the relevant (rules)” by the crew that had led to the same. “DGCA investigation revealed the crew carried out the landing in deviation of established SOPs (standard operating procedures),” a senior DGCA official had said on Wednesday (July 26).

P&W To Recall Airbus A320 Engines, IndiGo Says Working To Minimize Impact On Fleet

It seems like the problems with the Pratt & Whitney engines are not ending, as the engine maker has discovered a problem that could cause parts to wear out more quickly. RTX crop, the parent company of P&W said that a “rare condition” in powder metal used to manufacture certain parts made between late 2015 and mid-2021 will require speeded-up fleet inspections. The problem will impact the a large number of Airbus passenger jets, as the plane maker will need to have their engines removed and inspected, potentially adding to stress on airlines during the remainder of a hectic summer travel season, reported AP.

Among those impacted by the possible recall of the engines is the Indian low cost airline IndiGo, with a fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 planes. The engine involved is most often used to power the Airbus A320neo, a midsize jet popular for short and medium-distance flights. The company said it expects that about 200 of Pratt PW1100 engines will need to be pulled off and inspected by mid-September, and another 1,000 engines will need inspections in the next nine to 12 months.

Indian low-cost airline IndiGo has nearly 140, Air China has 43, Germany's Lufthansa has 37, and Mexico's Volaris has 35. Among US carriers, Spirit Airlines received 34 of the planes, Hawaiian Airlines has 18 and JetBlue Airways 16, according to aviation analysis site Cirium.

InterGlobe Aviation, the operator of IndiGo airlines, said that it is in contact with engine manufacturer Pratt and Whitney to thoroughly evaluate any potential implications on its fleet. "We are in receipt of the information from OEM Pratt and Whitney (P&W) regarding the outcome of the latest inspection of their engine. We are working closely with P&W to assess and minimise any potential impact to our fleet," said the spokesperson in a statement.

Working with Pratt & Whitney after latest engine inspection: Indigo

InterGlobe Aviation, which owns India's top airline IndiGo, said on Wednesday that it is working with Pratt & Whitney to assess the impact on the company's fleet after the engine maker's latest inspection of its engines.

"We are working closely with P&W to assess and minimise any potential impact to our fleet," InterGlobe said in a statement on Wednesday.

Pratt & Whitney is an American aerospace manufacturer with global service operations. It is a subsidiary of RTX Corporation.

Pratt's owner Raytheon on Tuesday said that a 'rare condition' in powdered metal meant 1,200 of more than 3,000 engines, built for the twin-engined Airbus A320neo between 2015 and 2021, have to be removed from planes and inspected for micro-cracks that would point to fatigue.

This news comes a month after IndiGo placed a record order for 500 narrowbody jets from Airbus. The airline still has almost 480 jets left in the Airbus pipeline from previous orders.

Pilot, Husband Thrashed For Torturing 10-Year-Old Help, Derostered By Airlines

New Delhi: An IndiGo pilot and her husband, also an airline staff, were thrashed by a mob in Delhi's Dwarka for allegedly employing a 10-year-old girl as a domestic help and torturing her. The pilot has been de-rostered by the airline, which said it is probing the matter, after videos of the incident surfaced on social media.

Shocking visuals from the spot showed people repeatedly slapping the woman, still in the pilot's uniform. She is pulled by her hair and hit simultaneously by several women as she cries for help. At one point, she starts screaming "sorry" but the assault continues.

Her husband is seen being assaulted separately by a group of men. He tries to come to his wife's rescue as some people intervene to stop the mob assault. One man is heard screaming, "She will die."

According to reports, the couple hired a 10-year-old girl for domestic chores about two months back. Today, a relative of the girl spotted injury marks on her arms and informed the police. The girl was reportedly assaulted on the suspicion of theft.

Soon, local residents heard of allegations that the couple would torture the girl and beat her up. As they saw the marks of injury on the girl's arms and under her eyes, a mob gathered and attacked the couple. Later, police reached the spot and arrested the couple. A case has been registered and further probe is on.

Indigo’s near two-thirds market share is worrying, but can’t fault the airline

India’s domestic air traffic surpassed the pre-COVID level a few months ago, quite like in many other sectors of the country’s economy. Even as the rise has been steady, negative events like the suspension of flights by Go First and the consistently dwindling market share of SpiceJet haven’t adversely impacted the industry. This has been largely due to one airline — Indigo.

Indigo’s market share has been rising month after month because it has been able to augment capacity, and operate additional flights, whenever and wherever required. Indigo’s story, ever since its inception in 2006, has been the envy of many successful airlines, not just in India, but globally.

Let’s look at some of the high points.

Indigo got its 100th aircraft in 2014, 200th aircraft in 2018 and now has a fleet of over 300 aircraft with many more to be added in the coming years. It flew over one million passengers in 2007, surpassed the 10 million passengers milestone in 2009 and flew 50 million passengers in 2015. The airline plans to carry 100 million passengers in 2024. It earned the distinction of flying 1,000 flights a day in 2017. The airline has, after becoming the largest Indian domestic player in terms of market share in 2011, held on to this coveted position.

This is in sharp contrast to other airlines — Air India, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, SpiceJet — which after being among the top two, at some stage or the other, have subsequently floundered.

While Indigo has steadily developed its market share by expanding its network and fleet, it has also successfully exploited growth opportunities, whenever another airline has collapsed. In fiscal 2012-13, when Kingfisher ceased operations and all carriers were vying to fill the space, Indigo increased its market share from 20 percent to 27 percent. Similarly, when Jet Airways exited the market in 2019, the airline witnessed a quantum jump. More recently, when Go First suspended flights effective May 3, 2023, Indigo led other airlines in augmenting capacity, flying on routes vacated by Go First. Result: Indigo’s market share breached the 60 percent mark — 61.4 percent in May 2023 and 63.2 percent in June 2023.

With the Tata-owned airlines — Air India, Vistara and Air Asia — collectively accounting for another 25.8 percent market share, these airlines and Indigo achieved a 90 percent market share between them in June 2023. This has, for the first time, led industry analysts to talk of the likely scenario of a duopoly in the Indian market soon. If Indigo and Tata group airlines have gained because other airlines — with the exception of Akasa airline, which also has been increasing its market share — have failed, can the gaining airlines be faulted?

IndiGo And Tata Group Airlines Corner Nearly 90% Combined Market Share

The duopoly of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd., operator of IndiGo airline, and Tata Group-owned airlines strengthened in June as their combined market share in the Indian aviation market neared 90%. IndiGo's market share rose to 63.2% in June from 61.4% in May, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. While those of airlines owned by the Tata Group stood at 25.8%.

That takes the combined share of the two entities to 89% in June, 130 basis points higher than May.

The two major players have scheduled more flights ever since Go First declared voluntary bankruptcy on May 3 in an effort to take over the space that the Wadia group-owned airline had previously occupied. Go First's market share stood at 6.4% in April. IndiGo has been the major beneficiary, as its market share has jumped to 63.4% from 56.8% in April, a rise of 640 basis points in just two months.

The Tata group airlines, on the other hand, haven't been able to exploit the opportunity, as their combined market share rose from 24.9% in April to 26.3% in May, but fell to 25.8% in June.
