Delay in relief? Chopper crash report may take a year

Two weeks after a helicopter joyride ended in a crash, claiming the lives of the pilot and a Borivli couple, Aarey police are yet to file a case as they are awaiting the final probe report from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Police have only made a diary entry of the incident.
But, in all likelihood, the report is likely to take at least a year and hence, compensation to the deceased couple's family, including his two-year-old son, may be delayed.
On December 11, the helicopter, owned by Aman Aviation and Aerospace Solutions Pvt Ltd, crashed in Aarey Colony within four minutes of takeoff. The pilot died before reaching hospital. Borivli resident Ritesh died two days later and his wife Brinda on Saturday.
"The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, that is probing the crash, could submit the report within a year, but there have also been instances of the report not being published even after four-five years. But in this case, I don't think there would be that kind of delay," said a senior DGCA officer. "Even the aircraft operator is awaiting the report to seek insurance."
This is not a one-off case of DGCA probe report delay. The Sahar police are yet to file an FIR in the case of Air India aircraft technician, Ravi Subramanian, being sucked into the engine of an aircraft at city airport. The incident took place in December 2015, but police are still awaiting the DGCA report.

Indian airlines dropping human waste midair to pay environmental compensation: Court

A recent order by India’s green court says that a fine would be imposed on all airlines that are found emptying toilet tanks midair.

The move comes after the hearing of a petition filed by a retired army officer, who claimed that the “walls and floors” of his house in the capital city of Delhi had been repeatedly spattered with human waste dropping from airplanes.

Consequently, the National Green Tribunal has directed the country’s aviation regulator, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), to impose a fine of Rs. 50,000 ($736) on carriers caught indulging in the practice.

“DGCA shall also issue directions that aircraft on landing shall be subjected to surprise inspection to see that human waste tanks are not empty,” the bench stated, according to a report in PTI.

India’s aviation ministry has, however, contested the Delhi petitioner’s claim and said that airlines store waste in special tanks that are usually cleared by the ground staff post landing.

Indian airport reports successful biometric project

Officials from Hyderabad airport have confirmed that the facility has successfully completed a pilot project on biometric identification for allowing entry into the terminal. The system links a fingerprint reader to the country’s unique ID database, called Aadhaar, which is linked to biometrics. Airports Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said the pilot project was held under the aegis of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). In most Indian airports, air travellers have to show their air ticket and a valid identity card to enter the facility. Aviation secretary R N Choubey has asked all airport operators, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and AAI, to study the potential of the system.
