SpiceJet May Launch Seaplane Service in Varanasi

If a new plan by SpiceJet goes well, one of the oldest cities in India may be host to the newest mode of transport in the country. Varanasi, the resiliant city that has thrived by the holy Ganga River for centuries, may be the first destination to get a regular seaplane service in India. Ajay Singh, the chairman of SpiceJet, told TOI of the budget airline’s aim to begin seaplane services in 2018, and how the historic city could be the launchpad, connecting it to other nearby cities like Lucknow.

SpiceJet already demonstrated the seaplane in Mumbai on December 9, 2017, flying it from the city airport and landing it in Girgaum Chowpatty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose constituency includes Varanasi city, also flew on the aircraft three days later in Ahmedabad. Come 2018, the seaplane that can land on water and smaller aerodromes across India may start flying routes once the aviation ministry forms its rules.

Singh talked a little more about his plan, saying, “Scale is very important for launching seaplane service in a viable manner and we are working on that project. Each seaplane costs about USD 5 million and I am looking at placing an order for at least 100 planes. If the rules of amphibian planes are put in place, we can start getting the seaplanes from 2018 and begin service. A number of state governments are approaching us for having this service in their states.”

SpiceJet flight to Hyderabad takes off four hours late

Pune: Flyers bound for Hyderabad faced an unexpected wait at Pune airport as their flight was delayed by more than four hours.
The SpiceJet flight (SG1216) was supposed to take off from Pune at 12.40pm. Instead, the time of departure kept getting pushed, and the flight finally took to the skies around 5pm.
Many disgruntled passengers have blamed the airline for informing them of the delay only at the last minute. "I got the first message about the delay only at 11am," said one passenger, "It said that the flight had been re-scheduled for 1.40pm. Then, around 1pm, I got another text saying that the flight was delayed further to 3.45pm."
The passenger alleged that the staffers got abrasive when questioned about the delay. "I fail to understand why the ground staff at most airports don't have proper and concrete answers. It does nothing but add to the anger and frustration," the passenger added.
Sheh Dixit, another passenger, tweeted to SpiceJet: "When you charge exorbitant prices for holiday season tickets, the least you can do is ensure your flights are on time or at least compensate your passengers for the lost time. Three hours delay without any prior communication (sic)."
SpiceJet blamed the delay on bad weather conditions. "SpiceJet flight SG 1216 operating Hyderabad-Pune was delayed due to bad weather conditions in Vijayawada in its earlier rotation, which was beyond the airline's control. The delay in departure from Vijayawada also impacted subsequent flights including Hyderabad-Pune-Hyderabad," the airline said in a statement.

IndiGo Airlines will have to shift operation of its flights, to and fro Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru to Terminal-2 of the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport with the Delhi High Court junking its challenge to the directions of DIAL while observing that traffic load at Terminal-1 was much beyond its capacity and such shifting was in the larger public interest. SpiceJet, which was later impleaded as party in the matter, was also denied any relief.

Justice AK Chawla dismissed the petition moved by Interglobe Aviation Ltd, which provides services in the name of IndiGo, challenging various directions/ communication from DIAL between September and October 2017, directing the airlines to operate its flights to and fro Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru w.e.f. January 4, 2018, from Terminal-2 of IGI. However, keeping in mind that the deadline for beginning the operations of IndiGo and SpiceJet from Terminal-2 in terms of the impugned communication is set to expire on January 4, 2018, the court extended the time provided to IndiGo and SpiceJet to shift their part operations till February 15, 2018.

Delhi HC upholds DIAL's decision to partially shift Indigo, GoAir, Spicejet operations from T1 to T2

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday upheld Delhi International Airport Limited's (DIAL) decision to partially shift the operations of Indigo, GoAir and Spicejet from T1 to T2 at IGI airport.

DIAL had asked airlines operating from T1 to shift one-third of their flights to T2 to be able to carry out expansion work according to its master plan and to meet growing passenger numbers.

The partial transfer of flights was expected to start in October.

However, following DIAL orders, IndiGo has written to the Delhi airport operator refusing to shift a part of its flight operations from terminal 1 (T1) to terminal 2 (T2) and threatened "action" if it is forced to do so.

No-frills airlines IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir operate from T1, which handled around 24 million passengers in 2016-17 whereas its rated capacity is 20 million passengers per annum.

Trading of ASKMs between airlines divides FIA, as SpiceJet favours norm

New Delhi: The issue of allowing trading of Available Seat Kilometres (ASKMs) amongst incumbent airlines to fulfil Route Dispersal Guidelines (RDG) responsibilities has divided the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA).

The division first came to fore during a meeting held in the aviation ministry last week, where SpiceJetBSE -2.43 % supported in favour of allowing trading of ASKMs between airlines. The FIA opposed the move on the grounds that this benefits only one airline, which is notoperating flights low-density CAT II routes and buying it from other carriers.

This would be the first time that FIA has been divided on an issue. FIA, in recent times, have together opposed entry of new airlines in India and abolition of five years and 20 aircraft norm, foreign flying eligibility norm for Indian carriers.
On December 11, 2017, the ministry had called a meeting to decide on the issue of allowing trade of ASKMs between airlines. The need for formulation of this rule arose because the National Civil Aviation Policy did not allow any such trade between airlines, which was earlier allowed.

SpiceJet pips IndiGo on punctuality

Mumbai: IndiGo, which accounted for a little over 39 per cent (4.13 million) of the total domestic traffic in November, slipped to the second position in on-time performance (OTP). Rival SpiceJet delivered the highest OTP at 81.9 per cent from four major metro airports, according to the monthly traffic data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

SpiceJet also clocked a seat factor of over 90 per cent for the 32nd consecutive month, at 95.5 per cent in November. “Our on-time performance at 81.9 per cent was the best of all airlines in India. SpiceJet also recorded the highest load factor for the 32nd month in a row. The load factor at 95.5 per cent is also the highest in SpiceJet’s history. This has set a new threshold in global aviation and we are proud of that,” said Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director, SpiceJet, in a statement.

Naresh Goyal-promoted Jet Airways’ OTP hit rock bottom in November as nearly half (54.1 per cent) of its flights along with subsidiary JetLite) failed to depart or arrive at their destinations on time, the monthly DGCA data showed.

Domestic air travel demand surged nearly 17 per cent in November to 10.48 million passengers compared to 8.96 million from a year-ago period, thereby registering a growth of 16.99 per cent on the back of festive season demand and addition of new flights and routes.

India to have seaplanes as new mode of transport? Read Modi government’s big new announcement

New Delhi: Seaplanes in India: This mode of transport has become the talk of the town since Prime Minister Narendra Modi boarded the flight from Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad to Dharoi dam in Mehsana district to end the Gujarat Elections campaign in his signature style. Now, the central government is bringing in a new law which will pave the way for the use of seaplanes as a new mode of transport in the country. Union Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari informed Lok Sabha about this yesterday. “I told the civil aviation minister, either you make a law or I (Shipping Ministry) will call it ‘air boat’ and make a new law to enable it,” Gadkari said and added, “So, the two ministries are working together to draft a new law.”

Gadkari emphasized that seaplanes will have a great impact on transportation in the country. “A seaplane in Mumbai can shuttle passengers between the city and Shirdi. It can take people to Goa,” he said. The Minister said this while replying to a debate on a bill — passed unanimously — to amend the Central Road Fund Act 2000, to earmark 2.5%of the fund for development of national waterways.

Notably, most of the seaplanes have a single engine and presently, single engine aircraft are not allowed to operate scheduled services. On October 4, SpiceJet unveiled plans to purchase more than 100 amphibian planes, estimated to cost USD 400 million, as the no-frills airline looks to boost regional operations, The budget carrier has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Japan’s Setouchi Holdings to explore whether the amphibian planes can be used by the airline in a cost-effective manner.

It has been learnt that under the ambitious Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), seaplanes are permitted to fly. “Operations under the Scheme will be permitted through fixed wing aircraft (including seaplanes) and helicopters,” as per the final RCS document. The RCS, also known as UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) aims to connect unserved and under-served airports as well as make flying more affordable.
