Sahnewal airport project hits first hurdle

Ludhiana: The acquisition of land for the expansion of Sahnewal airport has run into rough weather as several farmers have refused to part ways with their land. The farmers have filed their objections to the authorities expressing their reservation to give their land for the project.
Amarjeet Singh, a farmer of Unchi Mangli, whose 11-acre farm forms a part of total land, identified for the project, said, "We don't want to give our land for the project due to several reasons. First and foremost is that we are socially and economically connected with our land. Secondly, they have no proposal for our rehabilitation. Even if we want to buy land somewhere else, we will have to give stamp duty. Also if they don't pay the whole amount in one go, how can we buy land somewhere else". "Also, we can't ignore that getting a new power connection is a difficult task. We will have to install the submersible pump again and construct a room for the purpose," he added.
