AI to retain retired staff to vaert disruptions

Air India has offered a three-year work contract to its employees who are due to retire to ensure smooth functioning of its operations, especially maintenance of aircraft.

About 30 per cent of the national carrier's staff — including pilots, engineers who certify planes fit for flying, and flight despatchers — will retire over the next one year. The departure of so many employees can cripple what Air India calls its schedule of integrity, which includes pre-flight checks.

In a circular issued on November 6, Air India chairman and MD Ashwani Lohani has offered a three-year contract to former and soon-to-retire pilots, aircraft maintenance engineers and other staff. The staff's pay will be based on their last drawn salary and Air India can renew their contract again after three years. Pilots' salaries will be calculated based on the number of flying hours.
