Kerala All Set to Tackle Zika Threat

Kochi:  Kerala will screen those coming from countries affected by the Zika virus at its three international airports as a precautionary step to prevent the spread of this vector-borne virus in the state. The Union Health Ministry has already issued an advisory for all air passengers who have visited the affected countries and those who are planning to visit the affected countries.  According to an advisory issued to the airports, all passengers especially pregnant women who have visited or transited through countries affected with Zika virus infection during past 14 days and are having the symptoms like acute fever, rash, joint pain and/or conjunctivitis should report to the airport health units. The passengers, who have visited the affected countries, but do not have any symptoms on arrival, should also visit the nearest hospital facility as there are chances of developing the symptoms within 14 days of arrival.

The advisory also said pregnant women, who have travelled to any of the affected country during pregnancy period or two weeks prior to becoming pregnant (may or may not have any symptoms) should also consult their doctor and undergo regular ante-natal check-up.    Similarly, the passengers who are getting ready to travel or transit through the affected countries should follow ‘strict personal protective measures’ against mosquito bites especially during day times.
