Sonu Nigam: Aircraft crew punished for spreading happiness

Mumbai: When Sonu Nigam sang two songs from 'Veer-Zara' and 'Refugee' on a flight from Jodhpur to Mumbai on January 4, the video uploaded by passengers instantly went viral invoking the Directorate General of Civil Aviation's (DGCA) displeasure. On Monday, senior Jet Airways officials were summoned to the DGCA headquarters in Delhi and met Joint Director General Lalit Gupta and Deputy Director (air safety) Maneesh Kumar.
DGCA officials revealed that Gupta made it clear that the action of the crew indicated the airline wasn't serious about passenger safety. While the DGCA does not have a Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) about the use of the in-flight public address system making it compulsory for airlines to follow, the airlines have their own manuals that outline the rules, and Jet's only permits the cabin crew to use the public address system.
While DGCA has not issued any directives specifying what was required of Jet in writing, the airline grounded five cabin crew members after being pulled up verbally. The flight was chartered by the Nariman Point-based GeeCee Ventures Ltd for a private function hosted by its chairman Ashwin Kumar Kothari at Jodhpur's Umaid Bhavan Palace.
In a text message to this correspondent, Sonu said, "Hope next time someone doesn't dread going the extra mile to spread happiness amongst unsuspecting people."
