Chennai airport to have new terminal, to cost Rs 2,100 crore

New Delhi: After a series of complaints from all quarters on Chennai airport, the Airports Authority of India has found a solution that will cost Rs 2,100 crore.

The airport operator plans to build a new terminal for seamless operations.

"There is an old terminal flanked by two new terminals at the airport. We will build a new terminal in the place of that old terminal. This will not just resolve all complaints related to its maintenance but will also help increase the capacity," said a senior AAI official, who did not want to be identified.

The airport in Chennai was upgraded and modernised by the AAI in 2013 at an investment of over Rs 2,000 crore.
The current expansion, which is likely to be complete by 2020-21, is estimated to cost the airport operator another Rs 2,100 crore.

With this expansion, the capacity of the airport would increase to 30 million annually from 23 million currently.
