Work on civilian airport in Kadamba to start in 2019

Karwar: The construction work of a civilian airport in INS Kadamba naval base will commence in 2019. The government is planning to develop an airstrip at Manabi village in Kumta taluk, about 60km from Karwar, to boost export of cashew products and fish, said large and medium-scale industries and infrastructure development minister R V Deshpande.
Deshpande told reporters on Tuesday that his ministry is planning to develop infrastructure in the district to generate employment. The coastal area of Uttara Kannada produces large quantities of cashew nuts and farmers are in search of foreign markets. The fish produced in the district too has good demand outside India. But exporters are facing problems in preserving fish which is a perishable item. So the government will set up ice plants and processing units to preserve fish catch. The Indian Navy will take up the second phase of Seabird project soon and the airport built by the Navy will be used for flying civilian planes. The work will begin in 2019 and the government has identified a revenue land in Kumta for airstrip, the minster said.
