Govt set to deploy CCTVs around airport to track construction in slums

The problem of slums around Mumbai Airport is a serious aviation threat that seems insurmountable. Without a comprehensive count of shanties and dwellers, rehabilitation efforts are stuck. However, authorities have now decided to use technology to prevent the further spread of these slums.
"To avoid further encroachment and new constructions, monitoring will be strengthened through CCTV coverage and watch towers at key locations. Check nakas may be established on the highway/ entry points to the area to check the movement of construction material into the area so that new constructions/further encroachment are avoided," read the minutes of a meeting held between a Maharashtra government delegation led by CM Devendra Fadnavis and the Union aviation ministry on August 23.
"Survey in 14 pockets (as per priority requirement) of the identified 17 pockets will be completed by November 30, 2016. The 27,000 tenements constructed by HDIL should be utilised only for rehabilitation of slum dwellers of airport land, survey should include biometric data," it reads.
