Runway recarpeting work to resume soon

After more than two weeks of disruption, the hot mix plant for the runway recarpeting work at Trivandrum International Airport will resume functioning soon. The plant was shut down on November 17 following a directive issued by the Kerala state pollution control board.
After studying the area and impact of the plant, PCB has directed the contractor to resume work. District collector S Venkatesapathy said there was no more objections to the work. "The recarpeting work can be continued, if the work is conducted as per PCB norms," he said.
"The contractor has been asked to take measures to control the dust emission. The functioning of the plant can be restarted, since the study is complete. Another inspection is needed to check the effectiveness of pollution control measures in the plant installed for controlling dust emission. As the plant is a temporary one, only some pollution control measures are needed for its proper functioning," said a PCB official.
The PCB plans to conduct another inspection in the area within a week after the plant starts functioning.
