Chopper-happy netas notch up hefty campaign bills

Dehradun: Hectic campaigning in Uttarakhand has notched up hefty chopper hire bills running into crores of rupees for both the Congress and BJP, claim those in the helicopter business. With leaders of both parties taking the aerial route to reach the hilly parts of the state, sources said that the cumulative bill for Congress and BJP would be in the region of Rs 3-4 crore in terms of hire charges for 30 days.
The sources added that BJP had chalked up more flyer miles than the Congress because of the party having flown in more high-profile star campaigners like PM Modi, Amit Shah, Hema Malini, Smriti Irani, Yogi Adityanath, cinestar Manoj Tiwari etc who criss-crossed the state multiple times in order to address rallies.
On the Congress front, CM Harish Rawat and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi were the frequent chopper users. Justifying the use of choppers by his party, Jyoti Prasad Gairola, vice-president of the state BJP, told TOI, "The bookings for the choppers were done by our central office many months in advance under rates negotiated by them. The usage was done as per the guidelines set down by the Election Commission."
