Duo nabbed for illegal import of seven drones at Pune airport

Pune: After seizing seven ‘Precision Hawk — USA’ make drones at the Pune International Airport in September 2016, customs officials have finally arrested the two main accused involved in this case on Friday. The cost of all the drones is approximately Rs 1.2 crore. Each drone is valued at Rs 20 to 25 lakh.

The accused have been identified as Saurabh Mishra, managing director and Prateek Srivastava, marketing manager of Webonise Pvt Ltd. An official of the customs department, on condition of anonymity, said, “We sent them several summons, but they failed to be present before us. So, our officials finally arrested them on Friday.”

The official continued, “During interrogation, Srivastava admitted that he was involved in the crime. Webonise Pvt Ltd was formed only to carry out sales. But, the accused have also informed that HeightsNext — a fake store — was opened as part of their entire mission.” Earlier, the officials had arrested Amit Takta and Vikas Kumar, who are employees of the same firm.

A senior customs official informed, “The modus operandi was to import the machines in parts and then assemble them into drones here. Each drone is equipped with high-end technology and is capable of completing surveillance of large areas in very less time. The end use of such high-tech drones by buyers is also being probed from the security angle.”
