Karnataka seeks regulatory approvals for second runway project at Kempegowda International Airport

Bengaluru: Karnataka is pursuing with the Centre on securing early regulatory approvals for taking up the second runway project at Kempegowda International Airport.

"I have requested civil aviation secretary (RN Choubey) when he was in Bengaluru recently for speedy approvals for the second runway project. We hope to get it soon," Industries and Infrastructure Minister RV Deshpande, who is on a tour of Thailand, told ET on the phone.

"The airport is saturated now," the minister said. "The airport has already reached the passenger volumes that were projected for 2020. So we will soon need to add the runway," he said. “Once the second runway and second terminal are ready, Bengaluru will have one of the best airports in the world,' he said. In his interaction with corporates in Thailand on Monday and Tuesday , Deshpande asked them to invest in Karnataka, and said in the next few years, Bengaluru will have an impressive metro network and an expanded airport.

The Karnataka government, he said, is rapidly ramping up infrastructure in Bengaluru, and has earmarked more than US $ 1 billion this year to improve the infrastructure in the city. “In addition, we have allocated US $ 1.6 billion for handling issues on solid waste management, creating new storm water drains, better pavements and roads etc,“ he told investors in Thailand.“So, there is tremendous opportunity for Thai companies wishing to explore business opportuniti es in Karnataka,“ he added. The entire Bengaluru metro network (phase I & II) will be ready by 2022, he said.
