All smiles, but no remote on Air India flight

Two reasons gave rise to a mix of different feelings, as I entered the AI 173 flight, bound for San Francisco.
Firstly, it was Air India.
But when I was greeted by the stewardess with a warm smile and gracious namaste, I found my hopes of a problem-free flight rising. The aircraft was reliable, the crew was courteous, the vibe was positive, and the economy seats were somewhat spacious. When all the routine announcements were done, I finally buckled my seat, happy that there was no 'surprise announcement' that could've changed the course of the flight.
But as the saying goes, the show isn't over till the fat lady sings. In this case, the show wasn't over till the flight landed at its destination. And so, just when we were about to take off, there came an announcement -- "Dear passengers, due to some technical difficulties, you won't be able to call the air hostess through your remote."
