Gold dissolved in acid seized at airport

Chennai: Smugglers concealing gold in their body cavities, underwear or within electronic items to sneak past customs at Chennai international airport may be a thing of the past.
Sleuths on Wednesday discovered a passenger from Malaysia had adopted a modus operandi to smuggle in a consignment that illegal couriers rarely use: dissolving the gold in an orange-tinged solution of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid known as aqua regia.
Officials extracted and seized gold worth 5.14 lakh was from this solution, while two gold coins worth 1.2 lakh was also seized from the baggage.
Customs officials say such a modus operandi has not been recorded at Chennai or any other airport in India in the recent past.
