Malappuram: Seventy-odd passengers and crew members of a SpiceJet flight had a narrow escape when their flight from Bangaluru skidded off the runway while landing at Calicut International Airport, Karipur, on Friday morning.
No one was injured in the incident, though it sparked off a panic situation at the airport. Airport officials said the incident occurred because of rain.
Sources said the flight touched down on the left shoulder of the runway and dug into the muddy area after careening off the runway briefly. However, the flight recovered its position soon and came to a normal halt on the runway.
A few runway lights on the left side were damaged. Airport sources said the incident could have turned into a crash considering the speed of the flight while landing.
A full alert was sounded at the airport soon after the incident. Airport officials, flight staff, and passengers heaved a sigh of relief after the flight came to a normal halt.
