Airstrip plea before RSP

Bhubaneswar: The state government will request Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) authorities to hand over its airstrip to the Airports Authority of India to develop it as a full-fledged airport.

"We will request the RSP to provide security and fire services for the airstrip. If the RSP declines to do it, we will request it to handover the airstrip to the AAI to develop its as a full-fledged airport. Alternatively, the RSP will return the land to the state government and the same will be given to the AAI," said a senior official, adding that it had got the chief secretary's approval.

Airstrips in Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Utkela (Kalahandi) and Jeypore (Koraput) will be developed. The AAI manages Jharsuguda airport, while the state government maintains those at Jeypore and Utkela.

The expansion of Jharsuguda airport is being undertaken by the AAI and will be completed by April 2018. The RCS-Udan operation would commence in November.
