Pilots Working Long Hours Dangerous For Passenger Safety: Delhi High Court Tells DGCA

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday told the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) that no pilot should fly for over 125 hours, 30 days in a row. The court added that “making pilots overwork is dangerous for the safety of the passengers”.

In February, the HC had instructed the aviation regulator to bring out fresh directives regarding the duty and off hours of the cabin crew within 12 weeks. Media reports said Justice Vibhu Bakri passed the order on the plea of an NGO and also some Air India cabin crew on long-haul flights that the current Civil Aviation Requirements did not take into account the fatigue they experienced on long flights vis-a-vis their off time. The DGCA is responsible for bringing out CARs on issues regarding operation and safety of airlines. The High Court observed that this particular CAR was “irrational, inhumane and exploitative in nature”.

A couple of days ago, Bombay High Court, while hearing a plea for directions to civil aviation authorities over the continued failure of Pratt & Whitney engines, had asked the DGCA to not blindly follow the international guidelines but use its own “independent mind” to ensure passengers’ safety. It also asked the DGCA to take steps to ensure that the modified engines of affected GoAir and Indigo aircraft met all safety standards. The direction followed the Centre’s contention that it was happy with the efforts of the DGCA in the matter.
