AAI mulls ban on plastic at all airports across country

Pune:  Airports run and managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) across the country could see a blanket ban on the use of any kind of plastic on their premises by the end of 2018.
With the focus mainly on stopping edibles such as sandwiches, which are wrapped or packed in plastic, sources said discussions are being held on the ban since earlier this month and other departments in the government will be consulted towards finding alternatives.
"Though it is premature to put in a concrete comment on the issue, there have been initial discussions on it. However, the AAI is determined to stop all kinds of plastic use on the airport premises by the end of the year. More discussions will be held and a decision on the alternative packaging product will be taken," an official said.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) currently manages 125 airports. The Pune airport has around 13 food outlets inside the terminal building and they mainly sells snacks.
"There are several outlets, including duty free shops, inside the terminal buildings and on the airport premises, selling a variety of products. Food is one of the primary products. Ready-to-eat food items come wrapped in thin plastic covers generally. The focus is on stopping the use of any kind of plastic mainly related to packing or serving food," the official said.
The sources added that the talks had focused on using alternatives like bagasse. "The final regulations will be drawn out and implemented by the year-end," the official said.
