More individuals under CBI lens for AirAsia lobbying

Investigative agencies are examining involvement of more “players” in facilitating relaxation of the 5/20 aviation rule by lobbying officials at the behest of AirAsia, said people with knowledge of the matter.

These individuals are in addition to Sunil Kapur, Deepak Talwar and Rajender Dubey who figure as accused in the criminal case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation . According to the agency, the three acted as “lobbyists” for AirAsia.

These individuals were allegedly engaged by Kapur and Talwar to “reach out” to politicians and officials. Under the 5/20 rule, carriers needed to have been operational for five years and have 20 planes to be eligible to fly overseas. The five-year norm was scrapped in June 2016.
