India now #4 country for air travel; passes Germany for airport traffic with over 250m passengers in 2016; IndiGo’s 40% domestic share

The latest passenger statistics from the Airports Authority of India confirm that the country’s airports handled over 254 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 20% over 2015. This means that India moves into fourth place in the global rankings, overtaking Germany, and behind only the US, China and the UK. While the US and China are well out of reach, it is possible that India could overtake the UK (whose airports welcomed over 270 million passengers last year) either in 2017 or maybe 2018.

Leading the way among Indian airports was Delhi, which sailed past the 50 million passenger milestone in 2016 and finished the year handling 55.6 million passengers, an increase of 21% compared with 2015. Of the top 15 airports, 12 grew their passenger volumes by more than 15%, while two (Guwahati and Jaipur) saw growth of more than 30%. With passenger numbers at Bengaluru passing 22 million thanks to growth of 22.5%, local media have reported that there is now consideration being given to re-opening the city’s old airport, which was closed when the new airport opened in 2008.
Passenger numbers on domestic routes increased by more than 20% in every month of 2016. In fact the sequence of 20%-plus growth goes back to November 2015. The last time the country achieved such growth across every month was a decade earlier in 2006.
While most Indian airlines roughly maintained their market share of the domestic market across 2016, IndiGo continued to grow its share, reaching a record 42.6% in October, before falling back slightly to 40.3% in December. The airline’s increased share appears to have come at the expense primarily of Jet Airways, which saw its share of the domestic market fall from 18.7% in January to 15.3% in December, and Air India, which went from 16.0% to 14.0% during the same period.

The other leading players, SpiceJet and GoAir, both pretty much held steady with around 13% and 8% respectively. Relative newcomers AirAsia India and Vistara both gained a little ground, increasing their domestic shares from around 2% to 3%.

Bahrain may enhance direct air connectivity to India

Baharin, which historically served as a gateway between East and West, is planning to enhance air connectivity with India and other Asian countries.

The move follows a decision by Asian carriers to operate more direct flights to Bahrain International Airport (BIA) to help passengers save time and money.

“This year we are focused on developing underserved destinations in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other select destinations in Asia and Africa,” said Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, CEO, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) which owns and operates the BIA.
India figures high on the agenda as its represents 20% of Bahrain’s air traffic and this market is set to grow between five and 7% in the near term. Over 350,000 Indian nationals work in Bahrain and they travel mostly through connecting flights from hubs in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Bahrain has a large segment of expatriate workers and businesspeople from India, which gives it large potential for high traffic numbers.

“All segment of customers are important to us and with direct flights, they can benefit from shorter travel time and face fewer complications than what may arise with more stops along the way,” Mr. Binfalah said.

Handa, 67, was produced before a United States court in Los Angeles on Friday following the arrest this week. Fernandes proposes a single listed Asean holding firm for AirAsia

Petaling Jaya: AirAsia Bhd’s founder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes says he wants to combine the group’s separate units in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines under a single listed Asean holding company.
“We are urging Asean Governments to relax ownership restrictions and consider Asean investors as equivalent to local investors,” said Fernandes, who is also the low-cost airline’s group chief executive officer, in a filing with Bursa Malaysia yesterday.

Air India may revive some flights to Africa

New Delhi: Air India is planning to revive some international routes in Africa which became defunct in 2006-2007. Increase in the number of Indians living in Kenya and Tanzania is one of the main reasons why Air India feels it could be commercially viable to revive these routes.

In the recent past, Air India has launched operations in Vienna and is also planning to launch operations in Washington and Copenhagen.

“A lot has changed since 2006. There are Indians now living in Kenya and Tanzania. I know of many Indian teachers who are living in Kenya and Tanzania. Commercial viability of an international route depends on the passenger load factor,” said Lally Matthews, Secretary of Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO).

Although India has bilateral agreements with several African countries like Kenya, Zambia, Seychelles and Yemen, most of them are not being utilised. Air India is operating its flights only to South Africa at the moment. According to the tourism industry, many expatriates mainly from Gujarat living in Kenya and Tanzania who would like to visit India.
Air India officials said government support from Kenya and Tanzania is also a criterion for launching the operations.

“The government must agree on the number of passengers that is to be carried from Kenya and Tanzania. A separate agreement is signed for that,” said K R Krishnan, Senior V-P of travel consultancy firm, Nivalink.

Ownership and control of AirAsia with Indians: DGCA to Delhi HC

New Delhi: The ownership and control of AirAsia India would remain with Indian nationals under its Brand Licensing Agreement (BLA) with its parent company, Malaysia’s AirAsia Berhad, aviation regulator DGCA said on Thursday. The submission by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) before the Delhi High Court was made in response to the allegation of the Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) that as per the BLA, the ownership and control of the airline was with the foreign entity.
On FIA’s plea, the court had on November 11 last year asked DGCA to peruse the BLA between AirAsia India and AirAsia Berhad to determine who controls the low-cost carrier. The DGCA report said “based on the review of BLA along with provisions of Aircraft Rules 1937 and definition of control as provided in FDI policy, I do not find that the terms and conditions laid down in BLA dilute the substantial ownership and effective control of AirAsia India vested with Indian nationals.”
It also said that the “status of issuance of air operator permit (or flying licence) to AirAsia India does not change”. Meanwhile, AirAsia India opposed BJP leader Subramanian Swamy’s application to make R Venkataramanan, Managing Trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and a member of the Board of AirAsia India Pvt Ltd, a party in the case.

Jet airways mid-flight scare: Airline cautions pilots to stick to ATC norms, says report

New Delhi: A week after reports emerged that a Jet Airways Mumbai-London flight, carrying 330 passengers and 15 crew members, went off the radar for a brief period over Cologne, the airlines has reportedly sent a mail to its pilots reminding them of the radio communication guidelines. According to a report published by Times of India, the mail says, “Radio communication is a critical link in the pilot – ATC (air traffic control) communication system. However, it can be broken with surprising speed and disastrous results.” The Indian Express could not independently verify the same. As per the report, the mail also lists out a list of vital dos for the pilots as  “mandatory compliance”.
Jet Airways flight, 9A-118, last week, went off the radar and was reportedly out of contact for 15 minutes, causing a mid-flight scare. After repeated efforts to get in touch with the plane, the German Air Force had sent out two Eurofighter Typhoons planes to intercept the flight. But by the time the fighter jets took off, the contact was restored, the officials said. The reason behind the incident is still under investigation, however a recent report said one of the pilot was taking “controlled rest”, while another was on the wrong frequency.

Panel against auctioning of flying rights to neighbouring countries

New Delhi: A panel that includes India's top federal official did not favour a proposal that had sought auctioning of flying rights to airlines flying to the country from its immediate neighbourhood.

The Committee of Secretaries (CoS), which met in the second week of February, did not favour the Civil Aviation Ministry's proposal on the ground that bilateral flying rights are treaties signed between two countries on the basis of equality and are not candidates to go under the hammer. The Prime Minister's Office and the federal cabinet had asked the specially constituted CoS to examine the proposal made in June.
"Barring the aviation secretary, all other members, including the cabinet secretary, were of the view that bilateral entitlements are signed between two countries on the basis of equality and that auctioning them may not be the right idea," said a government official, who was aware of this issue. The aviation secretary, however, differed, citing European precedence to back the rights auction proposal.

The announcement was part of the civil aviation policy the Cabinet had cleared in June. It required designated carriers of countries within 5,000 km flying radius and seeking flying rights beyond those already agreed to bid for bilateral privileges. Both Indian and overseas carriers said the policy militates against universally-applied principles of bilateral entitlements. Aviation minister Ashok Gajapati Raju and his then junior Mahesh Sharma had divergent views on the issue too.

Trump-Iran Tensions Halt Indian Carrier’s Tehran Flight Plans

Air India Express, the low-cost unit of the South Asian nation’s flag carrier, has put on hold a plan to fly to Tehran amid renewed tensions between the U.S. and Iran after President Donald Trump imposed fresh sanctions on the Persian Gulf country.

Since some of Air India Ltd.’s plane purchases were funded by the Export-Import Bank of the United States, it won’t be able to fly to places where the U.S. government imposes sanctions, K. Shyamsundar, the airline’s chief executive officer, told Rishaad Salamat in a Bloomberg Television interview in Singapore on Tuesday. The carrier may now fly to Bahrain via Doha instead, he said.

The U.S., pursuing a harder line on Iran, slapped penalties on a raft of individuals and companies in response to the country test-firing a ballistic rocket last month. While it isn’t clear if the U.S. will tighten the measures, Iran’s foreign minister on Sunday mocked being “put on notice” in a tweet by Trump.

Shyamsundar declined to comment further on the potential impact of Trump’s policies.

Jet Airways flight scare: One pilot was ‘asleep’, another on wrong frequency, says report

New Delhi: A week after a Jet Airways Mumbai-London flight, carrying 330 passengers and 15 crew members, went off the radar for a brief period over Cologne, investigations have reportedly revealed that one of the pilot was asleep, while the other was on the wrong frequency, at the time of mid-flight scare. According to a report published by Times of India, sources have informed that one of the pilots of 9W 118 flight was taking “controlled rest”, while the other was tuned into a wrong frequency and had kept his headset volume to lower levels. The Indian Express could not independently verify the same.
The report says that because of the wrong frequency and lower headset volume levels, the German air traffic control (ATC) was unable to contact the second pilot after the plane went off the radar. “This issue is being probed by the airline and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. At this stage we will not be able to say anything else,” a Jet Airways official was quoted by Times of India.
The report also says that crew of another Jet Airways flight (Delhi-London 9W 122) was contacted by German ATC, which came to its rescue. The 9W 122 flight crew contacted flight operations in India, who used a satellite phone to contact the pilots of 9W 118. The German ATC were then alerted by the flight operations to head back as the situation came under control, Times of India report said.
The flight, 9A-118 went off the radar and was reportedly out of contact for 15 minutes. After failing to get in touch with the plane, German Air Force had sent two Eurofighter Typhoons to intercept the flight. But by the time, the fighter jets took off, the contact was restored, the officials said.

Near collision of IndiGo, Silk Air planes, govt launches probe

New Delhi: Two IndiGo and SilkAir planes were involved in a near-miss over Kolkata airspace last December, it has emerged, prompting the government to launch a probe.
The IndiGo plane from Kolkata to Hyderabad (VT-IEM) and the Kolkata-bound SilkAir aircraft from Singapore (9VMGH) were involved in the incident that happened on December 11.
Together, there were more than 200 people in the two planes. Both the airlines did not provide the number of passengers who were on board their respective flights when the incident happened.
Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has started a formal inquiry into the “serious incident”, according to a recent notification issued by the Civil Aviation Ministry.
Citing preliminary data from Indian authorities, French aviation watchdog BEA said vertical separation between the two aircraft “was zero feet” while the least horizontal separation between the two planes was reduced to just 0.6 NM.
About the incident, an IndiGo spokesperson said there was a reduction in horizontal separation between the two aircraft but “no error has been found on part of the IndiGo flight crew”.
The airline also said the situation could have been avoided had the Air Traffic Controller (ATC) not cleared its plane for take-off and made SilkAir discontinue the approach.
When contacted, a SilkAir spokesperson said the airline has provided AAIB with all the information and reports for the flight to aid them in their investigation.

"The joint venture is in process and the first delivery will start in 2018. After-sales service will also be provided in India," said Andrey Boginsky, who took over as CEO in January.

Some 60 helicopters will be delivered to India and the remaining 140 will be assembled or manufactured in India, he said at the International Defence Exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

The company has started production of the advanced medium multirole Mi-171A2 helicopter, with four deliveries set for Russia this year, he said.

Cial seeks direct flights to Europe

Kochi: With the new terminal (T3) set to launch in March, the Cochin International Airport Ltd's (Cial) search for an airline to provide direct flight connections from Kochi to Europe still continues with no certain answer yet.
Airport director Chandrakumaran Nair A said that they were holding talks with three airline companies looking into the possibilities of direct flights.
"Lufthansa would be ideal for Cial, as it would connect Kochi with Frankfurt airport. Frankfurt will serve as an ideal connection point between different European airports," he said.
Nair said that they were looking mainly to connect Kochi with Heathrow airport in London or Frankfurt airport as these are two most frequented European destinations for passengers travelling to Europe from Kochi. At the launch event of Air India's Dreamliner aircraft connecting Kochi and Dubai, Air India's director (commercial) Pankaj Srivastava said about the possibility of Dreamliner connecting Kochi and Europe. He said he has no qualms about instating a direct flight from Kochi as long Cial is able to guarantee full capacity for their flights.
"As per a survey conducted by Cial a couple of years ago, around 900-1,000 passengers fly from Cial to Europe daily," said Nair.

Brussels attack braveheart gets royal invitation

Mumbai: Jet Airways air hostess, Nidhi Chapekar, a survivor of last year’s Brussels airport terror attack, has been invited by King Philippe of Belgium to commemorate the March 22 bombings that left 31 dead and 270 wounded.

Chapekar was supposed to be in Brussels from March 18 on the invitation of the National Channel. “Today, I was informed of an invitation from the King of Belgium by the high commission. I am yet to receive it.” Chapekar had written to the Royal Palace during her recuperation in Brussels, and had thanked King Philippe who met her husband, Rupesh, and enquired about her well-being.

Nidhi continues to be employed with the airline, but does not fly any more.

“Since my return to India in May last year, I have undergone a surgery on my left ear. A surgery on my leg is pending and will happen soon.”

Chapekar told Mumbai Mirror that she would complete a second medical review with the team of doctors who attended to her while in Brussels.

The 41-year-old was on her way to board a Jet Airways flight for Newark when the explosions took place. A photograph of hers, taken immediately after the explosions, became the defining image of Daesh’s bombings. Chapekar survived despite sustaining more than 20% burns, multiple fractures, crushed bones, ruptured eardrums and being in a state of induced coma for 23 days.

Doctors had then noted that they are amazed at her will power and positive outlook. Chapekar, who has been with Jet Airways for over twenty years, also underwent extensive skin grafting.

Indian side proposes March-end, early-April meeting on air routes

Kathmandu: India has proposed March-end or early-April for Nepal-India Joint Technical Committee meeting on air routes after the meeting failed to convene in the first week of February, proposed previously, amid controversy over India’s proposal to allow overnight stay for in-flight security officer, popularly known as “air marshal”.

After the controversy ensued in Nepal, India had not responded to calls to fix a date for the meeting.

The first meeting was held in New Delhi last December in which India had proposed allowing overnight stay for in-flight security officer.

This time, as per the proposal, the meeting will be held in Kolkata.

However, before the meeting, Nepali officials will meet officials of the Airport Authority of India in the first week of March in New Delhi for the safety assessment of the Kathmandu-Mahendranagar-Delhi (L626) route which India had agreed to develop as a bi-directional route—a route that would facilitate two-way movement of traffic in the air.

Dramatic moment German fighter jets intercept London-bound flight after pilot lost contact with air traffic control

The Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled after the Jet Airways Boeing 777 aircraft lost contact with local air traffic control for a few minutes as it was crossing over Cologne.

Video footage apparently taken from a British Airways plane travelling behind showed two fighter jets flying alongside a passenger plane above the clouds.

The London-bound flight had 330 passengers and 15 crew on board and was flying from Mumbai to Heathrow.

Officials said contact with the passenger plane was restored by the time the fighter jets were airborne and that they were deployed to “ensure the safety of the flight and its guests”.

It made a safe landing at Heathrow after being escorted by the Typhoons as a precaution last Thursday.

The video was uploaded to Facebook by user CirrusPilot with the caption: “This incredible footage shows the German Air Force intercepting a Jet Airways 777-300ER bound for London (from Mumbai) yesterday after it failed to respond on the appropriate ATC frequencies.

“The trailing British Airways plane captured the footage near Cologne Germany.
“The JA pilots saw the Eurofighters and after speaking over emergency frequencies the plane carried onto London.”

Jet Airways said in a statement: “Contact between Jet Airways flight 9W 118, from Mumbai to London’s Heathrow Airport and the local ATC, was briefly lost while flying over German airspace.
“Communication was safely restored within a few minutes. As a precaution, the German Air Force deployed its aircraft to ensure the safety of the flight and its guests.

"The flight with 330 guests and 15 crew subsequently landed at London.”

It added that the matter was reported and the crew was taken off the roster pending a probe.

Jet Airways flight loses radio contact, makes Germany scramble combat jets

A Jet Airways Boeing 777 aircraft en route to London was intercepted by two German air force planes as it failed to communicate with the local air traffic control.

The incident occurred on Thursday and was reported on aviation safety websites after the intercept was filmed by a trailing passenger jet.

According to the Aviation Herald website, contact was lost when the aircraft, which was flying on a Mumbai-London route, was transitioning from Slovakian air traffic control to that of the Czech Republic. The website reported that contact was lost as the pilots were suspected to have tuned on to the wrong radio frequency.

According to the website, Germany dispatched two Eurofighter Aircraft when the Boeing 777 entered it's airspace. Radio contact with the aircraft was restored about 60 nautical miles north of Nuremberg, it said.

In a statement, Jet Airways said that communication was lost in German airspace and safely restored within a few minutes. As a precaution, the German Air Force deployed its aircraft to ensure the safety of the flight and its guests. The flight with 330 guests and 15 crew subsequently landed at London without incident. Jet Airways has duly reported the matter to the concerned authorities, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. "As part of the standard process, the flight crew of 9W 118 has been de-rostered pending investigation,” the statement said.

SAAB even decided to shut its manufacturing unit in South Africa in pursuance of a billion dollars’ worth of business opportunities in India over the next 10 years. It had planned to set up a development facility in Bengaluru, and Bangalore Mirror had carried the announcement of the joint venture (JV) in February 2011.

To fly off INS Vikramaditya, Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet awaits Parrikar’s big Strategic partnership model

US defence major Boeing is keenly looking to bag the contract for Indian Navy’s multi-role carrier-borne fighter jets. Offering its F/A-18, Boeing has said that it is awaiting the final strategic partnership model from the Ministry of Defence, before it works out its ‘Make in India’ plan for the fighter jet. “We are excited by the offer in the Indian Navy for the carrier-borne fighter aircraft. If you look around the world, then the most lethal, undefeated platform which can look into the future for the next 40 to 50 years is the F/A-18. We will work with the Indian Navy to be partners. We have also noted very clearly what the Defence Minister said that if you want to buy a fighter it has to be ‘Made in India’. We will certainly take a close look at that at work through our partnership models to respond to the Indian Navy’s needs,” Pratyush Kumar, President of Boeing India told FE Online.

Asked whether Boeing has identified any partners for the F/A-18 project, Pratyush Kumar said, “We are waiting for the new strategic partnership model. We are awaiting that clarity from the MoD, but, even before that we have to get the supplier base ready. We are working with the Indian supplier base to figure out the gaps and work out a plan for this.”

To Pay GMR’s Dues, Maldives Turns to RBI to Shore Up Forex Reserves

New Delhi: In an ironic turn of affairs, the Maldives government has turned to India’s central bank for a currency swap deal after losing a bitter international arbitration battle with an Indian construction firm.

“We deposited $100 million in Maldivian rufiyaa. This facility has been availed under the SAARC mechanism,” Maldives’ ambassador to India, Ahmed Mohamed, told The Wire.

He was referring to RBI’s currency swap arrangement which was first offered to SAARC countries in November 2012. In its notification which extended the arrangement for two years, the RBI had said that the arrangement was to “meet any balance of payments and liquidity mismatches till longer term arrangements are made or if there is need for short-term liquidity due to market turbulence”.

Under this arrangement, the RBI offers a currency swap arrangement for up to $2 billion both in foreign currency and Indian rupees.

The Maldives Independent had first reported the government’s decision to reach a currency swap arrangement.

The Maldivian media group noted that the Indian ocean nation’s foreign currency reserves were depleted after the government bought a bond of $140 million from the state-run airport firm.

Security expert upset with the release of Air India bomb-maker

Vancouver: Inderjit Singh Reyat – the only person ever convicted in the Air India Bombings has been released from his halfway house and can now live with his family.

One security expert from SFU thinks this release was the wrong move. Andre Gerolymatos, a member of the Canadian Advisory Council on National Security, is not convinced that Reyat is a changed man.

“He was and probably still is a terrorist. He has not done anything to warrant this release. And of course, there’s always a danger that he will go back doing what he was doing before he went to prison because when he comes out he’s going to be a hero to these people because he did not rat on them, he did not turn them into police”.

Reyat is still subject to some conditions including not having extremist propaganda, and not possessing anything that could be used to build an explosive device.

“A terrorist who has really recanted would have also provided the authorities with a list of names and participants in terrorism. He has never done it.”

He says this gives the wrong message to those who would do us harm.

“They are sending a message to every terrorist out there and even criminals that says ‘no matter what you do, eventually you will come out. You don’t really have to do much to get out. You don’t have to renounce terrorism. You don’t have to give up your friends. Just hang in there long enough and some parole board will let you go.'”

Vietjet Air to commence Delhi-Vietnam direct flight in July

New Delhi: Vietjet Air, a low cost airline from Vietnam, will be launching a thrice-weekly direct flight from New Delhi to Ho Chi Minh city, commencing services July this year. Currently there are no direct flights to the city which sees India as a big potential market in the future.
Speaking at a recent event, Nguyen Bac Toan, vice director – commercial department, Vietjet Air, stated, “Seeing the growth of arrivals from the India market, we have planned to launch direct flights to Ho Chi Minh city starting July this year. The flight, scheduled for thrice a week, will take five hours and 30 minutes to reach Vietnam. This will cut down the transit time by 50 per cent, as it takes about roughly 10 hours on stopover flights.”
The airline will operate Airbus A320 aircraft on this route, offering 180 seats. Initially the airline is looking to reach 80 per cent of load factor on both the routes and is hopeful to see the numbers increasing in the future.
Toan mentioned that this is the first phase of Vietjet Air’s expansion plans in India. “We are facing direct competition from Air India, Jet Airways and other airlines on the same route, but we will be looking at partnerships with airlines to add more domestic connectivity within India. The second phase might see more frequency of flights and addition of other destinations within the country. India is a big potential market and we are looking to expand our network here,” he added.

Will expand ties with Jet Airways: Lufthansa

New Delhi: German carrier Lufthansa plans to expand ties with Jet Airways to help its customers get better access to connecting flights in India. Lufthansa group, however, do not have any plan to buy an equity stake in any Indian carrier and would continue its focus on acquisitions in Europe, Carsten Spohr, chairman and CEO, Deutsche Lufthansa AG said on Wednesday.
“Etihad group is an investor in Jet Airways so when we look to intensify our cooperation with Etihad we will also look to enhancing the bilateral relationship between Jet Airways and Lufthansa, which already exists but could offer room for more,” he said. This will give Lufthansa customers better connectivity with the Tier II market in India through the network of Jet Airways.
Lufthansa group will be deploying the Airbus A-350 aircraft, dubbed as the most modern long haul aircraft making 50 per cent less noise and consuming 25 per cent less fuel, in the Indian market between Mumbai and Munich. Brussels Airlines, in which Lufthansa recently acquired a stake, will start operations between Brussels and Mumbai, Spohr said
Lufthansa currently operates 10 daily flights in and out of India, carrying around 3,000 passengers every day. Lufthansa will also soon name one of its Airbus A-380 aircraft as ‘Delhi’, in keeping with its tradition of naming aircraft after cities, he said.
India is one of the markets in which Lufthansa group would plan operating low cost inter-continental flights through its fullyowned subsidiary Eurowings — a low cost carrier. On its plans for low-cost operations to India, Spohr said: “It’s too early to say. We only recently started last year … since we are looking at extension of our fleet, our intercontinental aircraft with Eurowings. I was mentioning that India will be on the list but we do not replace existing destinations. We will rather complement, natural thought will be Goa.”

Canada frees man convicted for 1985 Air India bombing that killed 329 people

Ottawa: The only person convicted in the 1985 Air India bombings that killed 331 people has been freed, according to Canada’s parole board.

Inderjit Singh Reyat had been ordered to live at a halfway house following his release from prison one year ago, after serving two decades behind bars.

That condition has now been lifted and Reyat may return to a normal life, including “living in a private residence”, parole board spokesman Patrick Storey told AFP in an email.

The Sikh immigrant from India was convicted of making bombs that were stuffed into luggage and planted on two planes leaving Vancouver, and of lying in court to cover for his co-accused.

One bomb tore apart Air India Flight 182 as it neared the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard, including entire families.

The second exploded at Japan’s Narita airport, killing two baggage handlers as they transferred cargo to another Air India plane.

The blasts followed a crackdown on Sikhs fighting for an independent homeland, and those behind it were allegedly seeking revenge for the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar by Indian troops.

Reyat was working as a mechanic in westernmost Canada and purchased the dynamite, batteries and detonators used to construct the bombs.

Lufthansa's international budget airline to fly to India, Goa may be first stop

New Delhi: Europe will soon be a budget flight away from India. German mega airline Lufthansa's newly-launched low cost international airline is going to begin flights to India.
Carsten Spohr, Lufthansa Group's chairman of the executive board and CEO, said here on Wednesday: "Germans love to go to Goa. There is no direct service. So we can look at these kinds of destinations." He, however, did not give any date when this service will start.
Lufthansa, which has for now ruled out investing in an Indian airline, is deploying the latest long haul aircraft - Airbus A-350 on India routes. While this aircraft has been deployed on Munich-Delhi route, Mumbai is also going to get this equipment on Munich flights. "This state-of-the-art aircraft (A-350-900) marks a generational change on long-haul routes with 25% less fuel consumption, 25% less carbon dioxide emissions and 50% less noise," he said.
Spohr said Brussels Airlines, in which Lufthansa recently acquired a stake, will start flights between Brussels and Mumbai this March. Lufthansa will also name one of its Airbus A-380 aircraft 'Delhi' in March and increase the frequency of flights between Pune and Germany. "The first thing that we do after buying Brussels Airlines is to help them fly to India," Spohr said.

Australian cricket team treated 'unfairly' at Mumbai airport!

Mumbai: The Australian team, led by Steve Smith, which landed in Mumbai on Monday faced an embarrassing situation at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

The Aussies reached this metropolis from Dubai where they had a training camp and drove down to a South Mumbai hotel from where they will depart for Pune after playing a warm-up game against India A at the Cricket Club of India's Brabourne Stadium.

Usually whenever a foreign team visits India, a few porters are hired to load the baggage of the contingent onto a vehicle, which generally takes the cargo straight to the team hotel. But in Australia's case the players had to board their own luggage on a tempo.
Atleast some arrangement should have been done because international players deserve these basic facilities. And BCCI which is known for it's supreme management and hospitality, clearly failed to put their best foot forward.

Having focused initially on military customers, Aerotek Sika has over the course of the last few months been audited and approved by the Indian Ministry of Defence’s Center for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC) for ‘Manufacturing, assembly, testing, MRO of landing gear, hydraulic LRUs and actuators’, as well as by various divisions of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.

Sikorsky sets sights on $500 million Indian regional market

U.S. aircraft maker Sikorsky is in advanced talks with some Indian charter operators and other airlines for sales of its small passenger planes, one of its executives said on Wednesday.

Sikorsky, which is part of Lockheed Martin, is offering the M-28 turboprop passenger airplane that can seat up to 19 people and costs $6 million to $7 million for what it estimates is a regional market worth some $500 million.

India wants to boost regional aviation connectivity and reopen closed airports as part of its plans to improve passenger growth in one of the world's most competitive aviation markets.

Arvind Walia, Sikorsky's regional executive for India and South Asia, said such connections would bring about 300 million people in India's smaller cities into the air travel market.

"We are in dialogue with potential operators for regional connectivity and it appears to us there is huge demand," Walia told Reuters on the sidelines of an air show in Bengaluru.

China opens its account at Aero India 2017

For the first time in the history of India’s premier military aviation show, Aero India, China will make its debut in the event’s five-day 11thedition, starting on Tuesday, with a confirmed five-member team. Two more Chinese officials are also being considered to be the delegation, in which case the delegation would be seven-member strong.

According to defence officials, this surprise “inclusion” of the Chinese delegation had been under consideration of the defence ministry as a proactive stand taken by the Indian government.

The Chinese team – all from People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), the Chinese Air Force – will be headed by Major General Wang Qiang. part from Maj Gen Qiang, the defence officials have confirmed the delegation comprising Senior Colonel Gao Zhikuan, Col Huang Xinyang, Lt Col Jiang Jiaji and Maj Li Yiu.

The Chinese embassy in New Delhi is trying to add two more officials whose names have not yet been disclosed, but the union government is reportedly considering adding them too.

The Chinese will not be flying any aircraft at the air show, and the visit is being seen as more of an ice-breaker in the bitter-sour relations between Indian and China.

The Chinese delegation coming to Aero India is a significant development considering that China is helping Pakistan build up its Air Force with both the countries jointly developing the Joint Fighter (JF)-17 Thunder. Pakistan is also eyeing the Chinese stealth fighter Shenyang J-31, which could tip the scales in the favour of the Pakistan Air Force vis-à-vis the Indian Air Force, which hosts the Aero India shows at the Air Force Station Yelahanka.

Entry of International Players Could Change India’s Aerospace Landscape Forever

The Aero India 2017 airshow opening today (February 14) at Indian Air Force (IAF) Station Yelahanka, Bengaluru marks the 11th Aero India airshow. Unlike past events dominated by competitors seeking to sell aircraft to India, this time the world’s largest aerospace industries are offering to deliver complete production lines that will roll out today’s fighter jets in India – to provide the Indian Air Force with hundreds of modern, yet affordable fighter jets. Following the selection, the lucky strategic partner will be responsible for establishing the production line in India, most likely by teaming with a local company. If it will be a private or public sector company, the move has the potential to change India’s aerospace landscape entirely, currently dominated by government-run public sector enterprises (PSU) like HAL and the Defense Research & Development Organization (DRDO).
83 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) built by PSU Hindustan Aerospace Ltd. (HAL) on order cannot fulfill the IAF thirst for new fighter jets. Locally developed for more than 20 years and built by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), those aircraft are less capable, compared to fighter jets of similar class India could get in the international market. To fill gaps created by MiG-21 and 27 units that are phased out of service, India needs few hundreds of additional jet planes (likely 200 – 250) to stand up and replenish about 20 squadrons in the coming decade.

Two of the more likely suppliers that have proposed to set up production lines in India are Lockheed Martin and SAAB. Lockheed is ready to move here the production of the F-16V, while the Swedish firm will set up a production line of the Gripen E if it wins. Current models of the F-16 and Gripen are performing here at Aero India this week. Both were among the five finalists that competed for the now canceled MMRCA program (won by Rafale). The two companies are expected to establish a production line in India, by teaming with a private industry,

US firms may have an edge in big deals

Bengaluru: Defence deals, unlike in most other sectors, are not sealed at open events but result from long-drawn negotiations, often involving two countries and seldom restricted to two companies. Yet, events like Aero India provide a platform to firms wanting to bag big deals and countries trying to woo the best in the business.
At the 11th Aero India beginning Tuesday, experts say, firms from the US are likely to hold the 'Trump' card as compulsions of global politics in general and aggression of the Donald Trump regime in particular sees India walking with the US in the coming years.
But the most spoken about defence deal in the country will be the IAF's single-engine fighter aircraft. The IAF in November 2016 floated a request for information (RFI) for the fighter plane which has already received positive response.
Experts, however, say the two contenders, given IAF's requirements, will be the Lockheed Martin F-16 and the SAAB Gripen. Both the firms, US' Lockheed and Swedish SAAB, are offering planes better than they did for the medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) deal which Dassalut's Rafale bagged. Lockheed is offering the F-16 block 70, while SAAB will bring the Gripen-E, its next generation aircraft.
Randall L Howard, F-16 business development head, had told TOI that the firm was not selling a dead aircraft and that the IAF would be getting the best in the class. Lockheed has also offered to move a production line to India as part of the deal. "...Not only will India be making for India, but also for the world," he had said.

From May, Air India to start 4 flights a week between Chandigarh, Bangkok

Air India informed the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday that it was going to start flights between Chandigarh and Bangkok four days in a week from May onwards for which the flight schedule was yet to be finalised. However, as planned earlier, Air India is yet to take a final call about starting of flights connecting Chandigarh and Singapore.
The information was submitted before a division bench comprising Justices S S Saron and Darshan Singh during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation filed by the Mohali Industries Association.
Appearing for the Air India, advocate Sunil Kumar Sahore submitted that Air India was in the process of acquiring more aircraft but the supply of aircraft had been delayed at the end of the manufacturing company by over a month.
Taking note of the submissions, the court directed the convening of a meeting within 10 days between the General Manager (operations) of Air India, representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Intelligence Bureau to sort out the issues about “Hub and Spoke Policy” of Air India. Under “Hub and Spoke Policy”, Air India connects various cities in India with metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai before flying the international passengers abroad.
Also, taking note of the other connected petition filed by the Amritsar Vikas Manch seeking resumption of non-stop international Air India flights from Amritsar International Airport to London, Birmingham and other countries, the court directed Air India to file reply as to why the international flights cannot take off from Delhi to land in Amritsar and then take off directly for international destinations. The petitioner had submitted that as per “Hub and Spoke policy”, at present international passengers are taken by Air India flight to Delhi and they are made to wait there for even 10 hours before taking the next connecting flight to international destinations. The same issue was also raised by the Mohali Industries Association in case of the Chandigarh International Airport.

India’s budget carrier SpiceJet places UAE at core of expansion strategy

Mumbai: The UAE as a destination is a crucial part of SpiceJet’s expansion strategy, says Ajay Singh, the airline’s chairman and managing director, as it looks to stay profitable just two years after the budget Indian airline was on the brink of collapse.

Mr Singh wants to increase flights from India to Dubai by 50 per cent – to 15 flights a day within a few months from its current 10 daily flights.

"Now there are negotiations going on between UAE and India to increase some of the flying rights between the two countries and we expect that will happen very soon," he said. "We already have the landing slots in the airport in Dubai and take-off positions and so on, so as soon as the bilaterals are done we’ll be able to [start the new flights]", he said, adding that the rights should take about two to three months to come through.

The company is planning to launch flights to Sharjah this year, although a date has not yet been fixed, Mr Singh said. Muscat in Oman is another Arabian Gulf destination it plans to start flying to.
"We’ve focused in the Middle East in a significant way," he said. The company had just four flights into Dubai before he took over in 2015, he said.

"Our focus is really on profitability. We are not in this just to go on increasing market share. India has a lot of unmet demand in certain segments for the Middle East. There are a lot of Indians living and working there and increasingly a large number of Indians who want to visit there for travel and tourism."

Other airlines are also focusing on meeting the travel demands of Indian passengers. Etihad Airways recently announced plans to launch a third daily flight between Abu Dhabi and Bangalore from next month.

SpiceJet, which has 50 planes, last month unveiled a US$22 billion deal with Boeing for up to 205 planes.

Muslim Ban: Indian-Origin NASA Worker Detained, Phone Data Copied

Sidd Bikkannavar, an Indian-origin American citizen and an employee of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was flying back home to America after spending two weeks in South America.
On 30 January, when he flew back to the US, he was met with a rude shock as he was stopped at the e George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. He was questioned for over four hours and had to divulge his phone’s PIN to be let off finally, as The Verge reported.
Bikkannavar had left from the US on 15 January, while Obama was still President and returned on 30 January, a little over a week into the Trump presidency,
In a Facebook post, Bikkannavar said he was “detained by Homeland Security and held with others stranded due to the Muslim ban”.
Though he initially refused, as his phone was the property of his office with confidential information on it, he was forced to give his PIN and was detained till they finished copying his data.
Bikkannavar’s entry should not have raised red flags, as he’s a natural-born American with a US passport. He is also enrolled in Global Entry – a programme through CBP that allows individuals who have undergone background checks to have expedited entry into the country.
He has also not visited any of the countries listed on Trump’s executive order which ban the entry of Muslims. His office where he has been working for 10 years, JPL, is a US federal agency.
Bikkannavar’s passport was scanned by the CBP when he entered the country and was taken to a room to wait along with 5 other people who seemed to be affected by the ban.
He asked why he was being questioned but was not provided an answer.
Bikkannavar was also presented with a document titled “Inspection of Electronic Devices” and was explained that the CBP could search his phone. He showed them the phone which had a JPL passcode, making it NASA’s property.
Once released, he immediately went to the NASA IT cell to let them know about the breach, who weren’t happy about it.

Indians airlines never performed flights to Iran: official

Tehran: An aviation official, while rejecting claims on the halt in flights of Hindi airlines to Iran due to US sanction, said the Asian country never performed flights to Iran.
Deputy Director of Administrative Affairs in Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport City (IKAC) Kourosh Fatahi said Hindi airliners have never scheduled any flights to IKA refuting the news by some media on stoppage or halt in flight timetable of Indian companies to Iran.

“Indeed, Iranian airliners perform regular flights to various Indian cities while Indian airplanes have never landed in Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA).

Economic Times, India's leading business newspaper, had earlier claimed that Indian airlines had stopped their flights to Iranian airports following Donald Trump’s tough stance against Iran and six other Islamic countries.

UK-India deal agrees to ease restrictions on flights between two nations

At the CAPA India Aviation Summit 2017, an important new aviation deal was agreed on by Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, UK’s Minister for Aviation and the India’s Minister for Civil Aviation, Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju. The deal to ease restrictions on flights between the two nations will boost not only tourism and trade, but benefit NRIs and the diaspora visiting family and friends. Limits on flights from key Indian cities including Chennai and Kolkata have been scrapped, allowing for a greater range of flights for passengers; building new links with important trading partners is a key part of UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s government plans for a Global Britain, opening up new export markets and creating jobs and economic growth. At the moment, about 3.5 million passengers fly directly between the UK and India every year on 88 scheduled services per week in each direction.

Lord Ahmad ran through some facts. Tourism from India makes an important contribution to the UK economy. In 2015, there were 422,000 visits from India to the UK, bringing more than £433 million to the economy. British Airways have been flying to India for over 90 years and in 1948 when Air India established its first ever international route, it was to London. The number of Indian airlines has more than doubled in 10 years and in January India’s aviation market hit 13 consecutive months of passenger growth and is on track to become the largest aviation market in the world by 2030. The expanded Heathrow with the third runway will make possible an extra 260,000 aircraft movements a year, making Heathrow competitive with hubs like as Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt.

British Airways in talks with Indian carriers to fly to more international airports in IndiaForeign Feb 2017

New Delhi: Britain has urged India for more flight slots at Delhi and Mumbai airports while its state-run carrier British Airways (BA) is now moving ahead for a tie-up with Indian carriers to fly to more international airports in the country.

World's heaviest woman lands in Mumbai for operation

Mumbai: After two months of preparations, the world's heaviest woman - Eman Ahmed from Egypt who weighs over 500kg with a girth of five feet - flew into Mumbai on Saturday for medical treatment that could span over four years. The cost of moving Eman from her home in Alexandria into a cargo plane, loading her onto amini-truck at Mumbai airport and then using a crane to slide her customised bed into a specially prepared room on the first floor of Saifee Hospital on Charni Road has come to Rs 83 lakh.
"We have just paid Rs 83 lakh for the logistics and will collect another Rs 1 crore," said Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, the bariatric surgeon who has spearheaded the Save Eman campaign. Her treatment is being crowdfunded. But the wait isn't yet over for Eman, who left home after 25 years and her bed after 13. Dr Lakdawala said, "The earliest we may operate on her is after four weeks.''
Doctors, who have already done a battery of tests on her, will over the next month work on reducing water-retention issues using medicines and a protein-rich diet. "We should be able to cut down 50-60 kg with this alone,'' said Dr Lakdawala. Incidentally, doctors aren't yet sure if Eman weighs 500 kg or more. "She was weighed five years back and was 330 kg then. Her sister says she is now double the size,'' said the doctor.
Even the surgery in March will only be the beginning of a long weight-reduction exercise. As her doctor puts it, "We have worked out a four-year plan for her.'' The plan includes at least two operations, diet plans and physiotherapy sessions. After the surgery, Eman could lose around 100 kilos within the six months that she will spend in Mumbai.

Indian Airlines Reconsider Plans to Conduct Iran Flights

Indian carriers are either reviewing or stalling their plans to start flights to Iran, as the Donald Trump-led US government hardens its stance on the Islamic Republic, ratcheting up diplomatic tensions.

Air India Express is now taking a second look at its plans to start flights to the capital city of Tehran initially slated for later this year, Indian daily newspaper The Economic Times reported.

The carrier has alternative plans ready—Delhi-Tashkent-Almaty or Delhi-Doha-Bahrain—if geopolitical conditions make it difficult to start operations to the country. The plans, however, have not been dropped yet. Air India Express is the low fare international subsidiary of state-run Air India.

Even low-fare carrier Go Air, which was planning Tehran as one of its initial overseas destinations, has stalled those plans for now. The airline plans to start international flights later this year.

Last year, Jet Airways had made plans to fly to Tehran but put them on hold before some clarity emerged on who would lead the US government and which way it would move. The plans are now on the back burner.

The Trump government is said to be considering a renewal of sanctions—cutting trade and aid—on Iran after it recently tested a mid-range ballistic missile.

Probe who is packing buffet food: Air India crew

Mumbai:  Air India crew members on Friday expressed displeasure over the airline's decision to issue a general circular about breakfast buffet etiquette instead of first probing who took away food from the buffet table of a London hotel to be eaten later.
On February 6, an AI assistant general manager (AGM) issued a circular to all crew members titled, 'A buffet is not a take away'. A hotel in London where AI crew stay during stopovers had complained about some crew members regularly packing food from breakfast presumably to eat later. The AGM warned the offenders of serious disciplinary action.
Taking offence over the circular, AI crew members sent an email to the AGM. "Based on a mere three line email from a hotel staff, you (AGM) issued a circular hurting sentiments of majority of crew members. Have you even questioned them (the hotel) on the credibility of such email or even asked for any specific information pertaining to this matter/incident? Obviously if you had, you won't be publishing a general circular to us but would taking action against such crew members, or maybe you are aware of such 'handful' of crew but your department is not able take any action against them due to some constraints or limitations," the letter said.
