Ground broken for Air India memorial

Toronto: Families and friends of victims of Air India Flight 182 (Kanishka) tragedy as well as dignitaries and politicians joined on the grassy hillside at Humber Bay Park East near Lake Ontario yesterday morning for a groundbreaking ceremony for the first Air India memorial in Canada.
The federal and provincial governments are paying for the memorial, which should be ready by June, 2007. The design is still being finalized. The City of Toronto has donated the site at Humber Bay Park on Lake Shore Blvd. W., at the foot of Park Lawn Rd.
For Jayashree Thampi, head of the Air India 182 Victims' Families Association Memorial Committee, the waterfront is a fitting location because the Atlantic Ocean off Ireland is the final resting place of many of the victims.
Her committee began working on the Humber Bay Park memorial late last year.
