Mumbai airports giving shape to retail strategy

Mumbai: Mumbai International Airport Private Ltd (MIAL), which has the mandate to modernise Mumbai's airports, is chalking out a retail strategy and expects it to be a critical revenue-generator. MIAL will invite tenders for duty-free shopping by 2007 and will also allocate space within the airport premises for local retailers.
Indian airports are a low-volume, high-margin business and typically overcharge for a smaller selection of merchandise, say analysts. The duty-free shops in India have failed to keep pace with other leading world class airports.
MIAL managing director GV Sanjay Reddy said that the strategy will include the exisiting players, as well as new players, although no major retailers have approached the company till now.
