Left issues red alert against airport privatisation

New Delhi: When their arguments that privatisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports would lead to massive job cuts for AAI employees and huge losses to the government exchequer could not dissuade the government from going ahead with its plans, the Left is now seeing the move as an ‘internal security threat’ and wants the civil aviation ministry to review the entire privatisation exercise.
CPI(M) MP Tapan Sen said, “The transfer of operation and control of Delhi and Mumbai airports to private hands is a matter of serious concern. If a foreigner becomes incharge of all the operations it will have grave security implications, especially when the internal security situation is already facing a challenge.”
CPI(M) sources say the matter will be raised in the Left-UPA coordination meeting and the party is preparing a statement in this regard.
