Man onboard stops AI flight minutes before take off

Mumbai: A middle-aged man, on his way to take up a job in Doha, stopped the Air-India 875 Bombay-Doha-Bahrain flight just minutes before take off on Sunday after receiving a call from his ladylove threatening to commit suicide if he left her alone. All hell broke loose on board the aircraft as Peter Fernandes, 35, a resident of Mumbai, unfastened his seat-belt, stood up and said he wanted to get off the plane. Upon being told by the crew that it was not possible as the aircraft was by then taxing towards the runway, he first pleaded he was not feeling well. But when the stewards told him he would be provided medical assistance once the aircraft was airborne and that he should return to his seat, he became violent and threatened to kill himself if he was not allowed to disembark and reunited with his girlfriend, who, he said, was still waiting for him at the airport.
The crew then consulted the aircraft’s commander and it was decided to abort the flight and take the plane back to the bay where Fernandes was offloaded.
