With 62% growth, Indians just love to fly

New Delhi: The domestic air traffic grew from 17.57 lakh in July 2005 to 26.69 lakh in June this year, a growth of almost 62% during the period. This is the highest ever traffic growth recorded, the latest Directorate General of Civil Aviation data shows. International passenger traffic, however, registered a moderate 13% growth, from 15.5 lakh passengers in July 2005 to 17.8 lakh in June 2006.
Maximum growth in traffic was recorded between September and October 2005 and November and December 2005 when it increased 2.71 lakh and 2.67 lakh respectively. This was mainly due to the festive season, the DGCA data said.
Domestic air passenger traffic increased from 198 lakh passengers during July 2004 and June 2005 to 275 lakh passengers during July 2005 and June 2006, registering an increase of almost 39% over the period concerned.
The cargo traffic saw only a moderate growth from 65.2 kilo tonne in July 2005 to 69.2 kilo tonne in June 2006, an increase of only 6%during the period.
