Mumbai Runway overhaul: Flights hit

Mumbai: On Day One of the eight-and-half-hour closure of the main runway (09-27) at India’s busiest airport, airlines across the board reported delays upto 45 minutes.
The main runway at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport will not be operational everyday between 10 am and 6:30 pm, until November 24, for construction of rapid exit taxiways, upgradation of runway lights and much needed maintenance.
While flights were delayed by 15 minutes on an average in the lean period during the afternoon, this increased to over 45 minutes in the evening “due to a cascading effect’’, said spokespersons for various airlines. “Although we haven’t collected data yet, delays were definitely there,’’ said M G Jhungare, General Manager (Aerodrome) Mumbai.
