A cold reception

Indian aviation may be ‘happening’, but not all sectors associated with this revolution have moved with the times. The sheer number of agencies involved in managing airports, for example, ensures that each organisation sticks to its own interpretation of rules without any coordination. The sufferer in each case is — you guessed it — the passenger. A group of school children returning to Mumbai from Bangalore on Saturday had a 9.30 am flight and landed at the airport at 7.30 because of the early check-in rule. But the security staff would not let them enter the airport, citing security concerns. You can wait till 8.30, the children were told. No amount of pleading and cajoling by the teachers helped. Bangalore airport being one of the country’s worst, they had to stand outside in the shivering cold for an hour. Customer is king, did you say?
