Varanasi airport to turn swanky

Lucknow: The Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) airport at Varanasi is high on Union Civil Aviation Ministry’s agenda for modernisation of non-metro airports in the country.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) recently invited bids to short-list contractors for construction of Rs 64.98-crore new terminal building at the Varanasi airport. The contractors have been given 15 months to complete civil and electrical work for the building. It had also invited applications from established tour operators to start a full-fledged ‘car rental’ service at the Varanasi airport.
AAI sources said stringent selection criteria for contractors applying to carry out civil and electrical works at Varanasi airport was being followed with a performance review to be carried out for agencies, partner of a joint venture or a consortium who had earlier carried out civil or electrical work in any other airport in the country.
Moreover, the AAI had also put a pre-condition for the contractors that their annual financial turnover should not be less than Rs 19.49 crore against the works executed during the past three years to be eligible for the job.
