New Delhi: About 200 explosive trace detectors (ETDs) will be installed in all 77 operational airports in the country to detect explosives and narcotic material, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already placed orders for 200 ETDs at an approximate cost of Rs 91 crore, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said during Question Hour.
The ETDs are capable of detecting explosives and narcotics by sensing positive and negative ions.
Thefts: As many as 405 incidents of thefts have been reported in the last three years at various airports in the country, Patel said and listed out steps being taken to prevent these incidents including installation of surveillance cameras and strengthening security systems.
