Navi Mumbai airport: Centre nod to acquire land likely soon

Mumbai: The proposed Navi Mumbai international airport seems all set to take off with the Central Government likely to give its final approval in a month.
Secretary (Special Projects) Sanjay Ubale today said the state had sent a proposal to the Civil Aviation Ministry and expected to get the go-ahead in a month to start acquiring privately-owned land required to build the airport.
Of the 2,058 hectares of land required for the project, around 90 per cent is in the possession of various state government agencies and the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The rest of the land — around 200 hectares, largely barren and individually owned, will be acquired after the Centre notifies the acquisition as that meant for a public purpose.
Mumbai is expected to have around nine crore air travellers annually by 2030, and the existing international and domestic terminals at Sahar and Santacruz are expected to cater to just around four crore travellers annually. The Navi Mumbai airport is expected to add to the capacity in a big way.
