New Delhi: Radar coverage is in place to screen air traffic in the southern Indian peninsula in the wake of the recent LTTE air attacks on Sri Lankan airport, IAF sources said on Wednesday.
IAF has recently gone in for purchase of more aerostat radars ands low-level traffic detecting radars to fill in gaps in air surveillance in central and southern India, sources said. The bold LTTE air strike on the Lankan airport adjacent to the country's international airport has sent shock waves among the top security brass in India. Prominent security experts, including former senior Air Force personnel, said that wide gaps existed in the country's air surveillance coverage and acquisition of air capability by Tamil militant groups was a matter of "deep concern." They said that the bulk of India's surveillance coverage was tasked to monitor threats emanating from Pakistan and China but such a radar coverage was lacking in south and central India.
