In a rare case, various employees' unions have joined hands with the taxi union in their fight against the airport's decision to relocate the taxi stand. The Airport Authority Employee Union, Kambata Airline Employee Union, Cargo Union and Air India Employee Union have all come together with them to voice their grievances. The unions allege that the Mumbai Airport Inter-
national Private Limited (MAIPL) is ruining their livelihood in the name of modernisation.
The MAIPL plans to shift the taxi parking lots at both the airports away from the airport and has already started demolition and relocation, far from airport terminals. However, the taxi drivers claim that the new parking lot area is insufficient for the existing number of taxis.
President of the City Taxi Union, Mushtaq Qureshi said, "We have already written three letters dated February 3, February 7 and March 3. We are going to have joint meetings about the issue. Later we will conduct a grand public meeting with the people living in the hutments and we all will agitate against MAIPL who are targeting us and our trade."
Joint General Secretary of Airport Authority Employee Union, Nitin Jadhav echoed Qureshi's views.
