Malaysia's Penang state in talks over direct charter flights to Indian cities

Malaysia's Penang state government has started talks with the national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) to operate direct charter flights to cities in Japan, India and Europe, the local press reported Tuesday.
The island state in northwestern Malaysia is proposing that these flights should be seasonally operated to coincide with the peak tourist season of the selected destinations, said State Tourism Committee Chairman Teng Chang Yeow.
The request for direct charter flights to cities such as Osaka, Japan, and Chennai, India, was based on industry feedback that there will be demand for such services, explained Teng.
"However, it was made clear to us by MAS Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Idris Jala that the routes will only be considered if they were to provide good yields to MAS," he added.
Teng had a dialogue session with Idris last week.
