In order to ensure quick surface movement of all aircraft so as to augment runway capacity, the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) inaugurated two taxiways on Thursday.
One is a parallel taxiway, A4, and another a rapid exit taxiway, W. This is in addition to the other rapid exit taxiway, India, which was inaugurated last November.
Rapid exit taxiway W is about 1,700 metres from the threshold of runway 09/27 (the main runway), while taxiway India, is located 2,200 metres from the threshold. Both taxiways will help aircraft exit the runway faster than before, thereby reducing the runway occupancy time during landing and take-off.
Parallel taxiway A4, which stretches about 240 metres, will essentially join one end of the main runway to the other - a gap that was previously not covered as the Mithi River was a hindrance. The taxiway has been built as a bridge over the Mithi River. It runs parallel to runway 09/27.
