Ludhiana: As many as 67 youth from different parts of the State have been allegedly duped by a Ludhiana-based travel agent. The agent, Jatinder Singh Gill, has also allegedly escaped with their passports.
All these youth — who were promised jobs in Malaysia, Kuwait, Dubai, Spain and Thailand as masons, drivers and waiters on paying between Rs 45,000 and Rs 60,000 — reached the India Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), Delhi, late on May 16 to board their respective flights. Gill, who was to bring their visas, however, did not turn up.
On realising that they had been taken for a ride, 27 of these youth reached Ludhiana today and apprised SSP Rajesh Kumar Jaiswal of the fraud.
Gill, the youth told police, ran a marriage bureau, Meet Enterprises and Marriage Bureau, opposite water tank in New Grain Market near Jalandhar bypass. Some five months ago, he had placed an advertisement in a vernacular newspaper offering overseas jobs. The ad, which was repeated for two months, lured people from as far as Jamna Nagar, Haryana.
