Boeing seeks titanium from India

Mumbai: US-based aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co. is looking at sourcing a sizeable chunk of its titanium requirement from India in order to meet the growing demand of supplying aircraft to various airline operators across the globe. Interestingly, “the company has shown interest in mining and processing of limenite ore, the raw material used for producing titanium, in India,” said a source close to Boeing officials. Titanium and its alloys are used in manufacturing airframes and engines of aircraft.
With India having a 30% share of titanium exports, the company will save nearly 20-30% in its manufacturing costs if titanium is sourced from India when compared to its imports from countries like Canada or Australia. Mining and processing of titanium ore is regulated by the Department of Atomic Energy and this may soon undergo a change with the government de-regulating the mining process of the mineral.
The fact that Boeing is clearly in need for a huge quantity of titanium can be gauged from the orders it has secured in the past two years.
