How the deal was clinched

New Delhi: Mallya first attempts at acquiring Deccan Aviation was not received very cordially by the champion of low cost air travel in India, Captain Gopinath. He reacted strongly by calling Mallya “a kid in a toy store” who wants to buy everything in sight. This, in turn, evoked Mallya's annoyance as on board A380 he fired back at Gopi saying, “Captain overreacted. It is a public listed company and I do not understand what excited such reactions.”
But affection seemed to be back in the Bangalore aviation camp on Thursday with the Captain clearing the misunderstandings that cropped up between the two neighbours. Gopinath said initially he had rejected Mallya’s offer of combining Kingfisher with Air Deccan as nowhere in the world the merger of a full service airline and low cost carrier had worked successfully. “I mistook him, because Mallya came back and said he wants to invest as an investor and he would make the best offer. If we would have gone with any others, there would have been bloodbath in the markets,” he added.
