Kolkata: A city-based boutique owner's baggage went missing from an Air Sahara (JetLite) aircraft while travelling from Mumbai to Kolkata on Tuesday. When the baggage was finally traced on Wednesday, Nandini Mahalanobis found locks on five of the seven registered bags broken and the contents missing.
For losses worth several lakhs, the airline says it will pay her a compensation of Rs 3,000.
On June 24, Mahalanobis had gone to Detroit to participate in the North America Bengali Conference. Eyeing a potential business opportunity at the meet, she took along a huge collection of designer wear. Though her designer saris and dress materials found many takers, the entire stock wasn't sold out.
On July 8, she flew into Mumbai from Chicago on an Air India flight. Seven bags weighing 174 kg were booked in the luggage hold.
From Mumbai, she took a JetLite flight to Kolkata. But on landing here, she discovered that all bags had gone missing. The airline staff assured her the bags would reach Kolkata the next day.
The bags did arrive as promised. But to her dismay, five of the seven bags had allegedly been tampered with and contents, including several expensive saris, toys and $500 cash, missing.
Airline officials offered to pay a compensation of Rs 500 for each kg lost but she refused. Fuming over the loss, Mahalanobis filed a complaint against the airline at the NSCBI Airport police station on Wednesday evening.
